“GOD HATH SPOKEN...”

Heb. 1:1-4

Introduction:  This is a sublime passage of Scripture. But, when we diagram the sentence and find “subject and predicate,” the simple statement is “God hath spoken.” The rest of the words modify one of these three words.

Let us study the importance of these verses, and what they teach us.

I.          God’s Previous Revelations

            A. “Sundry times”

            1. Through out the ages

            2. Spoke to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, etc.

            B. “Divers manners”

            1. Various means were employed

            2. Examples:

              a. Abraham - directly, or in a vision

              b. Jacob - in dreams

              c. Moses - “as it were, face to face

              d. Gideon   signs

              e. Elijah - voice out of the cloud

              f. Samuel - voice in the night

              g. Ezekiel - in symbols

II.         God’s Present Revelation

A. “…by His Son”

1. No longer through “his servants the prophets...”

2. They were great men, but the greatest among them were considered servants (see Heb. 3:5, 6).

B. The Son is the final revelation of God to men.

III.        Characteristics of the Son

A. “. . . heir of all things....” - by appointment from the Father.

B. “. . . he made the worlds...”

1. John 1:1-4.

2. Col. 1:16.

C. “. . . the brightness of his (the Father’s, KWB) glory and the express image of his person...”

                    1. Col. 2:9.
                    2. Jn. 17:5.
                    3. Jn. 10:30; 12:45.

            D. “. . . upholding all things by the word of his power...”

                    1. Col. 1:17.
                    2. As much power to sustain the universe as to create it!

E. “. . . he...purged our sins...”

1. His blood cleanses us. (Mt. 26:28).

2. “The blood of the cross” is the saving blood (Col. 1:20).

F. “. . . he sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high...”

1. His ascension - he went back to the Father (Jn. 20:17).

2. There he sat down, expecting his enemies to be made his footstool. (Acts 2:30-36; Ps. 110:1).

G. “. . , he is made so much better than the angels...”

Conclusion: How blessed we are that the God who “made the worlds, and all things that are therein,” has seen fit to reveal Himself to us, and sent his only Son to “show us the Father.”
