THE CHRISTIAN’S DUTY

 Hebrews 13

Introduction:        As a Christian, one enjoys many blessings and benefits which are bestowed by God through Jesus Christ. However, there are also responsibilities and obligations which go along with being a Christian.

One passage of Scripture which gives an enumeration of the duties of the Christian is Hebrews 13.

I.          Social Duties

A.    Brotherly love (v.1) (cf. 1 John 2:9-11; 3:14; 4:20, 21)

            B.     Hospitality (v.2) (cf. qualifications for elders, 1 Tim. 3; Titus 1)

C.    Do good and participate (v.10) (communicate, fellowship)

II.        Personal Duties

A.    Abstain from Covetousness (vv.5, 6)

1.      Includes contentment.

2.      Results in dependence upon God.

B.     Hold marriage in honor (v.4)

C.     Remember the elders (vv.7, 17)

1.      Follow after their faith

                    2.     Obey them

            D.    Follow pure doctrine (v. 9).  Be firm!

E.     Do good (v. 16)

             F.     Pray (v.18)

Conclusion:        These are not “options” which can be left off if not convenient. These are “standard equipment”, and must be a part of every Christian’s life.
