Things that inspire awe

The view of creation, our feelings on our wedding day, an expensive steak or meal, getting your dream job, riding a motorcycle for the first time, beautiful music
Nothing is more crushing than if we have something that inspires awe in our lives taken away.
People are in constant search for something to inspire awe in our lives. We are attracted to awesome things.
We have dissatisfaction in our lives that we try to fill with awe of something.
concerts, museums, dates, sweet cars, delicate foods.
It’s not about the things you search after, it’s the fact that we are all hardwired for awe.

Awe is a lifelong pursuit

From children who are experiencing something for the first time such as snow, ice cream, candy.
To the person who is 70, who doesn’t stand in awe of many things anymore, but is either searching or has one thing that they keep coming back to.
The drug addicted person who is searching for the same feeling that they got when they first started drugs and now it’s just a necessity.

God created an awesome world

God designed this world to be full of things that would leave us standing in wonder.
*things that inspire awe*

God created you with an awe capacity

Our ears can hear the difference between beautiful sound and a screeching noise. From the pounding of the waves, to the song of birds, to a child laughing, the explosion of thunder, the roar of a waterfall, the howl of a wolf
Our eyes can see many different colors, textures. We can see things at fast speed without blurring. We can see near and far. We can make out detail.
Taste, we can taste spicy, sour, salty, bitter. When these tastes are put together correctly it can be like a party in your mouth, an explosion of flavor. When it’s wrong it can inspire is to vomit.
Touch, we can feel smooth, rough, shiny. The texture of wood grain to the roughness of a cat’s tongue.
Smell, perfume, flowers. We are created with the ability to smell the aroma that is around us.
God had created us with senses to experience the awesome world that He created.

Where you look for awe will shape the direction of your life

If you find awe in material things. Your money will be spent acquiring them.
You will tend to attach your identity to how many things or the cost of the things that you own because you want others to be in awe of you by your possessions.
The other area’s in your life will be neglected because you are focused of acquiring the things that set you in awe but your contentment in area’s that matter will be small.
Serve God and mammon
Matt 6:24
Matthew 6:24 ESV
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Where your treasure is your heart is. Treasure is what strikes awe in your life.
Luke 12:34
Luke 12:34 ESV
34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Awe Stimulates the greatest joys and deepest sorrows in us all
What brings you the most amount of happiness in your life?
What causes you the most amount of sorrow in your life?
What do you envy in the lives of others?
What makes your life living?
My life would be complete if I had ___.

Misplaced awe keeps us dissatisfied

Maybe it’s not that you don’t have the things that you are desiring.
Maybe your awe is misplaced and your desiring the wrong things.

Every created awe is to point us to the creator

God created an awesome world
No awesome thing is meant to give you what only the creator can give.
Horizontal awe is here to stimulate vertical awe.
Romans 1:20, 23; Psalm 19:1, Psalm 8:1-4
Romans 1:20 ESV
20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Romans 1:23 ESV
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Psalm 19:1 ESV

1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

Awesome stuff never satisfies

Things that bring awe weren’t designed to fill us, but only to point.
Mark 8:36
