Remember Jesus
How many here would say that they have a good memory?
All of you're hands should have went up.
So many times I hear people say that they just don't have a good memory that their memory is like a bunny's Tale …...short and fuzzy. Well, the reality is that the Bible commands us to remember things.
That tells me that to remember something is not an option and it also tells me that we can all choose to remember.
Each and every one of you have hundreds of thousands of things that you remember Without thinking about it.
The things that you remember all the things that you bring to you're mind often
I would think that most of us in this room remember how to tie your shoes. Why is that?
Because you have done it so many times you have brought that back to your mind so many times that it seems to you that it's automatic.
It is not automatic, The ability to tie your shoes was trained into your mind and it held in your memory and you recall that memory when you bend down to tie your shoes
You remember how to get to work, how to get home from work, you remember to stop at a stop sign
So all that to say that eacha nd every one of us has a good memory.
What doe the Bible command us to remember?
Acts 20:34–35 (KJV 1900) — 34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
Galatians 2:10 (KJV 1900) — 10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.
Hebrews 13:3 (KJV 1900) — 3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.
And 1 more command to remember what we want to focus on this morning….
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 (KJV 1900) — 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
We have come together this morning to partake of the Bread and drink of the cup because we have been commanded to remember.
There are 4 things that I want to draw out of this passage for us to remember….
We are to Remember 1. Jesus the Person 2. His Passion 3. His Presence and 4. His Promise
Let’s take a Look at number 1
1. Remember Jesus the Person
You're about to partake of a piece of bread and a drink of wine and I trust that you all know that these are memorials these two things are to remind us of the broken body the life of Christ and his blood his shed blood for our sins
Jesus said as often as we do this do this in remembrance of HIM.
This is the difference that Christianity has with every other religion. Christianity is about a person
You notice he didn't say as often as you do this remember all my Commandments remember all the rules that I've laid out remember to fast twice a week as often as he do this let it be a remembrance to you to pray every night
No, Jesus knew that what his disciples, and that's us here this morning, need the most, is to remember Jesus himself
As wonderful as this book is and as glorious as every word in it is and all of the beautiful holy commands precepts and stories that are given in it let us never forget, that as Jesus said to the Pharisees, in John 5:38–39 (KJV 1900) — 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
He was saying to them you know every Jot and Tittle, you know all the words that are in this book but you don't recognize and you don't even realize the whole thing is about me
And after His resurrection, when Jesus was walking on the road to Emmaus with those 2 Disciples it says: Luke 24:27 (KJV 1900) — 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
The whole book is about HIM, it is Jesus that we will find as we read the scriptures, all the scriptures point to Him.
I want to call us this morning to remember Jesus, we are here this morning and are partaking in communion and the goal is for us to remember Jesus the Christ Jesus the man Jesus the King Jesus as Lord and God
Let us never forget that He is our all in all, He is our purpose and He is what we are to be remembering
What else should we be remembering?
2. Remember His Passion ( His Suffering and Death, What He has Done on the Cross)
1 Corinthians 11:26 (KJV 1900): For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
This verse is telling us that when we partake of the bread and cup we are making an announcement, a proclamation of the Lord's death and we are to do that until he returns
The death of Jesus on the cross is the foundation upon which all of Christianity stands.
How could a true Christian forget Gethsemane? How could a true Christian forget that cross upon which his savior bled for him?
it sounds ludicrous and ridiculous to forget such a thing and yet by our actions Jesus is clearly justified to call us and command us to remember
By our lack of love and zeal for Jesus, by our casual living and by our distracted life we sometimes live as though we have forgotten the Cross upon which He died for us.
So brothers and sisters, as you watch each other and as you yourself partake of the bread and drink the cup allow the proclamation of the death of Jesus to ring in your heart
As you wtach and as you yourself eat the bread and drink the cup Hear Jesus say….” I died for you! I shed my blood for you, I allowed my body to be broken for you,
Let that proclamation sink deep into your hearts and minds so that when temptation comes and discouragements and doubts come this coming week and weeks you will overcome
Because, brothers and sisters, this time is a means of grace and strength and power for us to have a fruitful and victorious Christian Life.
As we Remember Jesus and what he has done for us , our faith in him will strengthen and Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.
What else should we remember?
3. Remember His Presence
So we've looked at remember his person secondly remember his passion and now I want us to remember his presence
Adrian Rogers said this...What we’re doing this morning is not a moment of silence for the dead; it is an act of fellowship with a friend. Jesus Christ is here this morning This is His table. He is the host. We are fellowshipping with the Lord Jesus Christ.
It’s True brothers and sister! Jesus is longer in the grave! He has risen and promised to be with His children always!
The Lord Jesus when he was taken up to Glory in Matthew 28 he says to his disciples in the great commission and low I am with you always even to the end of the world
One thing I Think that we need to remember as Christians often and be reminded often is that Jesus is present with us at all times
When Jesus said that we are to drink this cup and eat this bread in remembrance of him I believe that includes in remembrance of his ever present presence with us by his spirit
Brothers and sisters let's take time this morning as we partake to remember His presence with us, but also to remember that he is with you on Monday on your way to work on Tuesday when you're laying down when you're rising up on Wednesday you're with the Saints and on Friday when you're all alone Jesus is present with you don't forget.
we can talk about so many of the promises of God in the Bible that we ought to be remembering but this morning as we partake of the bread and the wine let us remember this promise of Jesus. That he will be with us always.
Which leads me to a promise that we need to remember…..
4. Remember His Promise
1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Yes we need to remember Jesus the man, we need to remember His Death and We need to remember His presence but let us never forget that he is coming back.
As much as our focus this morning is on how he gave himself for us and shed His blood on the cross Let’s always keep before us that the bread and the wine is also to remind us that he did not stay in the grave but that He victoriously rose and will return for us.
Let us live day by day with expectancy and patience, remembering that He will return!
Conclusion
In light of all of this, let’s come carefully, worthily, humbly to the bread and the wine with a heart of reverence and carefullness.
Let me ask you a question this morning….Have you forgotten that you have been purged of you're old sins? Have you forgotten Jesus?
This morning as we patake we are partaking in a means of Grace to Keep you from Forgetting that Jesus has purged you.
Peter says in 2 Peter 1 - that if you fail to dilgently add to you're faith virtue, knowledge, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and love…. it is because you have failed to remember Jesus and what he has done.
Let this morning be a remembrancer, a memorial to give you the victory.
But not just this morning, remember His blood and his body and His forgiveness and his coming resurrection tuesday morning when you're 10 year old won’t do his school and you want to be frustrated.
When that customer blames you for the fact that dewealt doesn’t have stock of the item that he ordered 2 moths ago,
When you are sick and tired of COVID and all the regulations and restriction and masks, Remember Jesus and the victory will be yours!!
I read this quote in a sermon on Communion: And so, when we take the Lord’s Supper, we look backward to His death. We look upward to His presence. We look onward to His coming. And we look inward to our hearts to see if indeed we are trusting Him and loving Him.
There is a story about a young lady who lived in a country where it was against the law to assemble as brothers and sisters in Christ. She was a member of a group of Christians that the state had not approved. And they had their soldiers to enforce the state religion. But she was going with a group to take the Lord’s Supper, and a soldier stopped her on the street, and to check her out, he said, “Young lady, just where are you going, and what do you intend to do? Why are you out at night like this?” Well, she didn’t want to lie, but she didn’t want to deny, either. So she thought real fast, and she said, “Well, I’m going to meet with a group of friends. We’re going to talk about our Brother’s death, and have fellowship with one another, and talk about our Brother. And then we’re going to talk about what part we have in His inheritance.” He said, “All right, pass on.” And she went on to have the Lord’s Supper.
Isn’t that why we are all here this morning brothers and sisters?
Pray
I want to give some time for anyone to come and share what God has been doing in you're life,
Remember, we are family, we are for you, Let’s not be afraid to confess our faults, because the bible says that if we do we can find healing and that is why we are here….
