1 Samuel 16:1 ESV
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
We know that Saul was rejected because he did not follow God orders.
1 Samuel 15:2–3 ESV
Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”
Saul did not do what God commanded.
He kept the King alive
He kept the best sheep & oxen
Samuel told Saul obedience is better than sacrifice
“Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.”
1 Samuel 16:6–7 ESV
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
After 7 sons
1 Samuel 16:11–13 ESV
Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
David is anointed in the midst of his brothers.
“The Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward.”
To anoint (religious) v. — to administer an oil or ointment to; often in a religious ceremony of blessing or dedication or consecration.
When the Spirit of God came upon David, it was a symbol that he was equipped and empowered by God to become the future leader of Israel.
I want you to think about anointing as enablement. “Jesus said the Spirit of the Lord is upon me for He has anointed me to....”
Keep in mind that this was a secret anointing. (Which is also important)
1 Samuel 17 - The Philistines prepared for battle
We know that Isreal was facing Goliath and the Philistines
Goliath - Goliath was either about 9’6”, or 6’6”, or 6’0”, depending on where you get your information.
The Masoretic (may-so-re-tic) Text, written in Hebrew, tells us he was six cubits and a span—roughly nine feet, six inches.
The Septuagint, the ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament says Goliath’s height was four cubits and a span—about six feet, six inches tall.
The Hebrew text found in the Dead Sea Scrolls tells us that Goliath was four cubits tall—which is about six feet.
But no matter which manuscript is “right,” there’s one thing they all agree on here: Goliath was significantly taller than the average Hebrew male
David Said “For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
1 Samuel 17:32 ESV
And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
1 Samuel 17:33 ESV
And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”
David was passionate, dedicated, and remember he was anointed, but just because he was anointed to be the next king....
Did not mean he didn’t need development…
Yes we have the Spirit of God living inside of us!
Yes we have been anointed to do a great work… But it doesn’t mean we don’t need to be developed.
Saul said something that we have all heard before, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to Fight with him, for you are but a youth.”
You are not able - People don’t even know you but will try to size you up!
People will label you and put their on restrictions on you!
David was like wait!!!
1 Samuel 17:34–35 ESV
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.
#1 I might be young but I am responsible - “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father”
You might not know this but what you thought might be a mediocre job was actually preparing you for giants!
Raking leaves -
Fast food job -
Sweeping the hair at the Barber shop -
Working with daddy on the truck -
Watching big momma in the Kitchen -
Selling lemonade on the corner
Even David brothers threw off on Him about His Sheep...
David said When there came a lion or a bear - Let’s paint this picture
Not only did they show up! They took a lamb from the flock.
David said I went after Him....
Wait.......... David you caught up to the lion and the bear…
David said.... Then I stuck them down…
Opened their mouth…
Took the lamb out of their mouth.
Wait I’m not done!!! “And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.”
I am anointed but Trust me.... I’ve been developed....
1 Samuel 17:36 ESV
Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
David said your servant has stuck down both lions and bears! - This what messed me up. It’s not singular but plural
The giants you have to Face....
God told me to tell you not only have I Spiritually anointed you to do the work but practically you’ve been killing lions and bears all your life!!!!
Lions in your childhood
Bears trying to attack your family
You have been developed for this....
You have overcame the lions who told you “Your not able”
You have overcame the bears who tried to destroy you!
Physically and mentally
Lions + Bears + Anointing = My Calling
