Breaking the Chains of Generational Curses

“How to Deal with the sins of your parents”

Intro

Why are you the way you are?  Why do you struggle with the sins that you do?  Is it true that you will end up like your parents?

(Before I begin…some have terrible home situations…some have fine situations but complain more loudly than anyone else.)

Ex. 20:4-6 gives the second commandment.  But it is worded in such a way that a way of thinking came from it that was wrong or off a little.

It is clarified in Ez. 18:1-4  They were to no longer believe that God would condemn the children because of their parents…but does that mean Ex. 20:4-6 is now invalid or wrong? No.

!!! I.  Starting in a hole

Fact is that if your parents got divorced, then statistics say that you will get one.

If Parents were on drugs, then it is likely you will be.

If your parents got into the occult (witchcraft, tarot, psychic, etc.) then it is likely you will.

Your Parents sin patterns will likely become your sin patterns.

Your parents, like it or not, are the spiritual authority in your house and over you.  Whatever spirit (demonic, not ghost) they allow into their house will affect everything and everyone in that house.

You start off in a hole.  If others start at the starting line, you start off a hundred meters behind them.

If you find it hard to live for Jesus, it could be that your parents are negatively affecting you.

That’s not fair!  We are born into sin…that’s not fair either.  If you are upset about that, then you should be just as upset over the blessings you received that are not yours.   Fact is that we are constantly standing on the shoulders of millions of other people.  Millions shed their blood to gain us the right to worship in freedom.  SO missionaries could reach our ancestors, in order to preserve this Gospel.  Many have given their lives, and we strut around acing like we earned it! No.   We are the beneficiaries of an enormous inheritance that we did not earn.  Just like the sinful tendencies and weaknesses that we didn’t earn either.

If your parents are divorced…right off the bat you have the majority of statistics against you.

Sin of Divorce:

*72% of all teens in jail come from broken homes

*A child coming from a single parent home is seven times more likely to be a delinquent than a child from a two parent home.

*Of all possible contributing factors only divorce rates are consistently associated to suicide among teens

*2/3 of all rapists come from female-headed households

*70% of all violent criminals come from female-headed households

*Most victims of child molestation come from single parent households

*A child living in a single parent home is 10 times as likely to be beaten or murdered than a child from a two-parent home

*Children of divorce are 60% more likely to undergo divorce than in tact families.

!!! III.  Down with Ungodly Parents!????

What do I do about my parents?  Two Biblical choices…you must pray and ask God which one He is calling you to.

1.  Rise up (not against them, but the sin) and tear down the altars to sin in your home.  The OT gives many examples of how the next generation got sick of the sin of their forefathers and rebelled against it, tearing down the altars to false gods.  Throw away the porn, the drugs, the new age crystals, the ouja boards, the tarot cards…burn them!

If this is your choice you had better be sure that you have heard a word from the Lord.

2.  You can submit to, and honor, your parents without taking on the load of their sin.  You must live in constant vigilance and reject those things not of God from your heart.

(i.e.  your dad is a drunk. One day offers you some.  Instead of doing the normal teen thing and being excited about what you’re not supposed to do, simply say “no thanks”)

Dad offers you up advice on the ladies saying…make sure you wear a condom or something like that.  Instead of thinking “cool!  Dad just told me it’s ok to score”

Remember what the Word of God says and let that overrule your parent’s advice.

Balancing act between loving and respecting your parents, but also knowing that they are living wrong and you don’t want to wind up like them.

Regardless of which method you choose, the action is the same…Pick up the Sword and go to war for your family, go to war for your future!

!!! Summary/Altar

You want a blessed and happy future?  Please don’t be dumb and think that it is going to arrive one day and park in your lap.  You want a blessed future, then you rise up and fight for it!

The sin cycle ends here!
