Reading and Prayer Marathon Sermon
In preparing for this sermon I told Randi this would be a fun sermon and she said well you never say that
So this morning we are going to take a deeper look into what we will be doing in the next few days
Deuteronomy 31:9–13 NASB95
9 So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, at the time of the year of remission of debts, at the Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing. 12 “Assemble the people, the men and the women and children and the alien who is in your town, so that they may hear and learn and fear the Lord your God, and be careful to observe all the words of this law. 13 “Their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live on the land which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess.”
As the nation of Israel was about to go into the promise land
Moses writes the entire law down and puts it in the care of those who were to go before the Lord on behalf of the nation
It was there role to keep the law and to keep it before the nation and the king and the people
Then Moses tells them every 7 years they are to read the entire law
Church they were to read it no matter who was in their land
They were to gather the people and read through the entire law
The purpose of this was a reminder of where they came from
It was also a reminder of the covenant they made with God
And lastly a reminder to keep those commandments they received from God
Ever seven years they were to do this
It was charged to the Levites who served God on behalf of the nation of Israel
This was part of their job
They come into the promise land and begin to take possession of it and begin to set up the cities
Then we get to Judges
Judges 2:6–10 NASB95
6 When Joshua had dismissed the people, the sons of Israel went each to his inheritance to possess the land. 7 The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 8 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten. 9 And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10 All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel.
Joshua has gathered the people and everything is being settled and now they are being dismissed to go to their own tents
To their own villages and towns and cities
Then we read that Joshua has died and that generation that came and took possession had passed
Then we get to famous verse 10
There arose a generation who did not know the Lord or know anything about them
That generation had a responsibility to pass on what they knew about God to the younger generation
That younger generation had a responsibility to show up and listen to what the other people had to say about God
This is a problem church
2 big problems
the older generation has stopped teaching and preaching and reading the word of God
And the younger generation has stopped learning and studying the word of God
You can see this as you read the rest of the story
This generation stopped walking with Jesus
Church I would say we have a generation that has stopped walking with Jesus
Right now we have a Romans 1 world
Where God has I believe turned us over to our own fleshly desires
2 Timothy 4:3–5 NASB95
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
We are currently in a time when people and the world are turning away from sound doctrine
Turning from Truth
We have a generation church who does not know the Lord and does not know the work of the Lord
See how Paul encourages Timothy
Continue to do the world of an evangelist
Continue to share the Gospel that Jesus saves with the lost people
Do you see church how we have a responsibility in this
Just like the older generation that Moses was talking about going into the Promise Land
We can begin now to teach and preach and read aloud the Word of God
We haven the fulfillment of the Law
Matthew 5:17 NASB95
17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
We have the fulfillment of the Law in Jesus and church we have a responsibility to read and share the fulfillment of the Law
Its Jesus church!
We have it all right here
We need to reignite our passion for the Word and for Prayer
2 Kings 22:8–13 NASB95
8 Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan who read it. 9 Shaphan the scribe came to the king and brought back word to the king and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the Lord.” 10 Moreover, Shaphan the scribe told the king saying, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king. 11 When the king heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes. 12 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant saying, 13 “Go, inquire of the Lord for me and the people and all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found, for great is the wrath of the Lord that burns against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”
Church Josiah had just become King and they are repairing the temple and fixing somethings
Doing maintenance on the church and cleaning some things
Then as they are doing this, one of the servants finds THE LOST BOOK
Church it is the Book of the Law that was reference in Deuteronomy when Moses gives his charge to the people
They read it and the light bulb turns on
They are to be reading this every 7 yrs
They are to be teaching it and preaching it and it is to be a topic of discussion at the dinner table
It is to be in front of them always
So they take it before the king
What you need to know about this king
1 Kings 22:1–2 NASB95
1 Three years passed without war between Aram and Israel. 2 In the third year Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel.
JUST READ
2 Kings 22:1–2 NASB95
1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. 2 He did right in the sight of the Lord and walked in all the way of his father David, nor did he turn aside to the right or to the left.
He did was was right in the sight of the Lord
So when it was brought to the attention of the king that they have not been reading it and have not been keeping the whole law as it was written
He humbles himself before the Lord by tear his clothes and then he has it read before Him
So now that the king knows they need to be doing somethings
What is his response you might ask?
2 Kings 23:1–3 NASB95
1 Then the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem. 2 The king went up to the house of the Lord and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the Lord. 3 The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant.
Josiah does what they should have been doing the entire time
Josiah reads the entire law before them and they make a covenant with God to obey God in everything they do
The king was cleaning up the church and they find the lost book of the law
It comes to the kings attention they have not been following after God completely and notice that the king humbles himself and repents
Turns from their current ways and then gathers the people and reads the law in-front of them
Then enters into a new covenant with God to obey God completely
Psalm 119:11 NASB95
11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
The Psalmist knew God’s word was so important that he memorized
It was so much a part of his life that he memorized it
So church let me ask you this question
Now that you have been introduced maybe this morning for the first time to the fulfillment of the Law
Or maybe you have learned this morning the importance of the Word of God
What will you do about it
Church this why in just a few days we will met to read the fulfillment of the law the entire law aloud
Some of you are nervous about names, speak them with confidence
But church I believe we have a generation that does not know the Lord or the work of the Lord
I believe we have a generation of churches who do not preach the whole word
So we are going to do our part and to read the entire Word of God
While we are doing that church, we are going to pray
What an important time to go before the Lord and cry out on behalf of our church, our city, our state, and our nation
What a great and powerful things happen when we pray church
Acts 12:3–16 NASB95
3 When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. Now it was during the days of Unleavened Bread. 4 When he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out before the people. 5 So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God. 6 On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison. 7 And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter’s side and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.” And his chains fell off his hands. 8 And the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” 9 And he went out and continued to follow, and he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. 10 When they had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened for them by itself; and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel departed from him. 11 When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent forth His angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” 12 And when he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was also called Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. 13 When he knocked at the door of the gate, a servant-girl named Rhoda came to answer. 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gate. 15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They kept saying, “It is his angel.” 16 But Peter continued knocking; and when they had opened the door, they saw him and were amazed.
Church there is power when God’s people join to pray
And if ever there was a moment in history when our churches, our cities, our states, our nation and the world needed prayer it is now
So while we are speaking the Word of God aloud we will be meeting with God in His throne room to pray
Because church there is power when we pray!
I believe the reason Peter walked out of the jail was because the church was praying for Peter
We have seen what happens in our church when the church prays
We have seen people healed and many other prayers answered
CLOSING
So church this morning if you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship with Jesus we want to invite you to the front and met with someone who can show you in scirpture that Jesus Loves you and died to pay for you sin
Or maybe you are here this morning and maybe this morning Jesus has touched your heart and you have been put on notice that you have not been reading your Bible or walking with jesus
I would invite you this morning to repent and run to Jesus
Or maybe you need to make another decision of church membership
Or just spend sometime in prayer
