Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible The Biblical Idea of Name

“Name” in biblical usage correctly describes the person, place, or object and indicates the essential character of that to which the name is given. Adam names the animals according to their nature (Gn 2:19, 20); “Noah” means “one who brings relief and comfort” (5:29); “Jesus” means “savior” (Mt 1:21). When a person was given a new position or a radical change took place in his life a new name was given to indicate that new aspect, for example, Abraham (“father of many,” Gn 17:5); and Israel (“one who strives with God” or “God strives,” 32:28).

The first time the name shows up is in the history of Hannah V3
1 Samuel 1:10–11 LEB
10 She was deeply troubled, so she prayed to Yahweh and wept bitterly. 11 She made a vow and said: “O Yahweh of hosts, if you will look with compassion on the misery of your female servant, and will remember me, and not forget your female servant, and will give to your female servant a male child then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and a razor will never pass over his head.”
The people of Israel will ask God for a king …. Up till here they where A Theocracy where God was the King But they wanted to be like everybody else have a king and an army. God said: “If you want to be a nation with a king I’ll be the king of Host.”
And them we see it again in the story of David and Goliath
David up against Goliath...certainly this is one of the best-known confrontations in the Bible! What fascinates me in this story is the contrast between the “huge” Goliath and the “little” David. (see the story in
1 Samuel 17:45 LEB
45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You are coming to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I am coming to you in the name of Yahweh of hosts, the God of the battle lines of Israel, whom you have defied!
Goliath seems to have everything to win the battle: size, power, strength, experience, and even weapons!
David, the curly-headed teenager, the young shepherd, has...a sling and 5 stones.
Humanly speaking, David’s fate is sealed. The outcome of the battle is decided in advance, and yet…
“So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.” (see the Bible,
1 Samuel 17:50 LEB
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with the sling and with the stone, and he struck down the Philistine and killed him, but there was no sword in David’s hand.
What is the secret to David’s victory?
Unshakeable faith in YaHWeH Sabaoth, the Lord of hosts.
David knew God and had faith in Him. Here’s what David declares just before striking down Goliath:
“‘You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’” (1 Samuel 17:45)
Here are the small keys to this great victory: a sling, several stones, courage, unshakeable faith, and especially...the Lord of hosts on his side!
There is another history we know in 2 Kings 6 the Prophet Elisha and the King of Aram
2 Kings 6:15–17 NIV
15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. 16 “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
What is the battle you’re facing?
Depression, Fear of losing your job, Failure, Illness, A fight with temptations, A complicated family situation?
Whatever your battle is called, it is not beyond the reach of the Lord of hosts.
I invite you to trust in Him with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
Because God is on the battlefield with you, you are in a position to win the battle. See...God is rising up. God is advancing and fighting for you. The victory is here.
I invite you to pray with me…“God, You are the Lord of hosts! I worship and bless Your name. I thank You for being with me on the battlefield. Your presence in battle with me guarantees my victory. You are great, and You’re good. Thank You for being in my life. Teach me to honor You more and more every day. In Jesus’s name, amen!”
