Introduction

Since Solomon did not find satisfaction and meaning in material success and wisdom he sets his mind in pursuing pleasure and see if he find meaning in them.

Solomon’s Conclusion in Pursuing Pleasure

Ecclesiastes 2:1 NASB95
1 I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself.” And behold, it too was futility.
Not Satisfying
Not Lasting
Pleasure proved meaningless.
Laughter and pleasure only give temporary pleasure.
Thrills quickly dies away as quick as comes.
To continue experiencing pleasure one has to continue seeking pleasure. It does not repair or fill the void in the human’s soul. Any solution comes out to be just a band aid.
Solomon experienced temporary satisfaction from all kinds of pleasure, but quickly found that pleasure was not something that could give genuine, lasting fulfillment in life.

Solomon’s Approach in Pursuing Pleasure (vv.2-3)

Ecclesiastes 2:2–3 NASB95
2 I said of laughter, “It is madness,” and of pleasure, “What does it accomplish?” 3 I explored with my mind how to stimulate my body with wine while my mind was guiding me wisely, and how to take hold of folly, until I could see what good there is for the sons of men to do under heaven the few years of their lives.

Where did he turn to seek pleasure?

He turned to entertainment.
He turned to alcohol.
