Our Christian lives are filled with God’s goodness, mercy, and grace. However, because we have Jesus living within us, we are at war with the enemy of our souls.
SLIDE: Overview of points
5. Salvation - “the helmet of salvation.” - 17. Eph. 1:13
5. Salvation - “the helmet of salvation.” - 17. Eph. 1:13
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
“Salvation” is the Greek word Soteria, So-tear-ee-uh. It means deliverance, preservation from danger or destruction, that which conduces to the soul’s safety - Multiple Lexicons.
We are commanded to “take the helmet of salvation.” The helmet protects our head and, in this case, our spiritual minds, the way we think, and what we think about. The salvation of God is to guard and guide our thinking.
Salvation is the term that is used for one who has been saved by faith in the Gospel - Romans 1:16.
The message of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the message that saves, and this Gospel of the grace of God is the “gospel of your salvation” - Eph. 1:13.
Salvation is deliverance from one’s slavery to sin, its eternally damning consequences, and receiving eternal life in Jesus Christ.
A. The Bible says, “Today, is the day of Salvation” not tomorrow - 2 Cor. 6:2.
A. The Bible says, “Today, is the day of Salvation” not tomorrow - 2 Cor. 6:2.
We studied this verse last week. God has “helped” us “in the day of salvation.”
God will help you by saving your soul and putting you in right relationship with Him, and giving you access to the throne of grace so you can find “help” in time of need - Heb. 4:14-16.
B. God’s salvation concerns the souls of Man - 1 Pet. 1:9.
B. God’s salvation concerns the souls of Man - 1 Pet. 1:9.
8 Salvation belongs to the Lord. Your blessing is upon Your people. Selah
Salvation is not found in anyone or anything except the LORD God of the Bible, Himself.
41 Let Your mercies come also to me, O Lord— Your salvation according to Your word.
Salvation is God showing mercy to the sinner who cries out to Him for forgiveness by faith in Jesus.
2 Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; ‘For Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.’ ”
God is my salvation. He is the only one who can save a soul from hell.
10 The Lord has made bare His holy arm In the eyes of all the nations; And all the ends of the earth shall see The salvation of our God.
The whole world is going to learn one way or another that Jesus Christ is the Salvation of God.
1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
Jesus Christ is symbolically represented as the “arm of the LORD.”
12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
There is no other name under all of heaven by which a man or woman can receive salvation!
Our souls must be saved.
9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.
Our souls need salvation because every soul that sins will die:
4 “Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.
Our souls need to be delivered from the eternally damning consequences of sin:
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In this verse, God contrasts death and eternal life. While physical death is certainly a “wage” of sin, that is not what Paul is only stating here, and that is the reason he juxtaposes death with eternal life. The Bible teaches that there are two deaths: physical death and the second death.
14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
The “second death” in Revelation 20:6, 14, is eternal, conscious damnation in the lake of fire for all rebellious, unrepentant, and unbelieving humanity.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In contrast to the second death, God offers the free gift of eternal life.
You do not earn eternal life. Eternal life is a gift from God given to anyone who believes in Jesus.
God is gracious. He will have mercy and not sacrifice. He will give to the one who labored for one hour the same wage as the one who worked twelve hours and suffered through the heat of the day.
We do not receive the loving favor of God by the works of righteousness which we have done. No, dear saints, we receive the gift of eternal life by faith in the lovingkindness of God displayed in Christ.
Reminding yourself and believing how you are forgiven and saved from sin will guard your mind from lies. This is what God wants for you.
Right now, our country is hell-bent on lies, propaganda, and treason. May God help us.
You, dear saints, are to put on the helmet of salvation by faith in God’s salvation.
6. The Sword of the Spirit: the Word of God - 6:17
6. The Sword of the Spirit: the Word of God - 6:17
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
The Roman soldier’s sword was around two feet long. It was an effective sword used in close combat. Since we are in hand to hand combat with an invisible, treacherous enemy, we must use the Spirit’s Sword as our Lord did when tempted by the devil.
The Spirit is the Holy Spirit who is given to all who believe in Jesus: “to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father” - Gal. 4:5-6: 5
“Word of God” - Word is “rhema” in the Greek and “means that which is stated intentionally: a word, an utterance. The Greek philosopher Plato denoted rhema as “an individual word” - NIDNTT.
Rhema is used throughout the NT:
47 He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”
Christ explains why people in our country reject His eternal, absolute truth. People reject God’s words because they are not of God. If you don’t believe the Bible, the true Word of God, then you are not of God. It’s that simple.
All of Jesus Christ rhema or words were from the Father:
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
Every Word Jesus spoke was rhema; if you are to take up the sword of the Hoy Spirit, then you need to know the words of Christ recorded in Scripture.
25 So when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had said one word: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,
26 saying, ‘Go to this people and say: “Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand; And seeing you will see, and not perceive;
27 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.” ’
28 “Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!”
The Rhema of God is the totality of His Written Word. Paul spoke “one word” or “one rhema.” Paul attributes the one rhema word he spoke to the Holy Spirit and quotes from the book of Isaiah 6:9-10.
Paul also reveals that “the salvation of God” is the rhema of God - the Sword of the Spirit.
The totality of God’s Word is rhema, and we need this rhema more than ever before; may we pledge our lives to the rhema of God.
When our Lord encountered Satan, He stated three times, “It is written.” “It is written, man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God; It is written, you shall not tempt the Lord your God; Away with you, Satan, for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.”
All the verses that Jesus Christ quoted were from the book of Deuteronomy 8:3, 6:16, 13 and offer us a wonderful example of how we use the rhema of God in hand to hand combat with demonic powers and satanic schemes.
May God bless you, dear saints, and if you do not know Christ as your God and savior, may you believe that Jesus died and rose again and receive forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, and eternal life.
God bless you.
