Introduction
Last week we talked about the fact that we have died to the old self and we should be looking to the heavenly things in Christ Jesus to satisfy us and fulfill us not to earthly things. Have you guys ever wondered how serious you needed to take sin? Or have you ever underestimated sin in your life and it comes up and bites you? I know I have had that question and underestimated sin many different times in my life and it has always come back to bite. God desires for us to recognize the seriousness of sin and fight it with the Holy Spirit and prayer. This week Paul is expounding on the truth that we should have died to our old self and being hidden with Christ in God and because of our death to the old self we should continuously be killing our sin and living to Christ.
Put them to death
Put them to death
Paul is calling these Christians and ourselves to something higher. He just finished telling us about the new life fully revealed on the last day at Jesus’ return but he is telling us that in the present time it should start showing itself more and more in our lives until the day he comes back or the day we die and are in His presence awaiting that day. He commands for us to PUT TO DEATH what is earthly in us. Part of the sanctifying and cleansing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives is the continual exposing of sin in our lives so that we can kill it and kill it where it starts. Example: This reminds me of baseball camps at the high school that we used to run with little kids. We used to teach these little kids different things like when their hands were backwards on the bat we showed them the right way to hold their hands. And so many of them would do it
