Mighty God!

A Christian’s hope. This morning we will look at Psalm 71, so grab your bible as we delve into the scripture.
(Help picture inserted here)
Question: When do you call out for help?
Question: When you cry out for help whom do you cry out to?
when do we normally cry out for help, when do we plead for hope? when we are in the midst of trials, tribulations, persecutions (be them real or just perceived)
Oftentimes we cry out only after we have tried to do everything we can think of first.
Help, used 253 times in NASB, 213 OT; 40 NT; help can bring us to Hope and today we are talking about our Mighty God: Our Hope!
Hope used 137 times in NASB, 64 in the O.T. and 73 in the N.T.
Hope, even in the midst of trials, tribulations, persecutions and the like we can have hope, lasting hope, everlasting hope. Even in the midst of needing deliverance we can cling to hope because we know the Lord of hope.
Hope, we were people without hope, but Jesus Christ became our hope (Eph2:12; 1Tim1:1)
Ephesians 2:12 NASB95
12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
(insert story of helpless, hopeless, crying out for help and finding hope) and where the hope was found
1 Timothy 1:1 NASB95
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,
(Transition) if you have not opened your bibles, please do to Psalm71 as we break open the Word together. My aim this morning is to read the passage as it is written and then look at situation, the hope , the hope that sustains, and the hope that works out all things for our hope is also our comforter in times of need.
Psalm 71:1–2 NASB95
1 In You, O Lord, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed. 2 In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; Incline Your ear to me and save me.
Psalm 71:3–4 NASB95
3 Be to me a rock of habitation to which I may continually come; You have given commandment to save me, For You are my rock and my fortress. 4 Rescue me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, Out of the grasp of the wrongdoer and ruthless man,
Psalm 71:5–6 NASB95
5 For You are my hope; O Lord God, You are my confidence from my youth. 6 By You I have been sustained from my birth; You are He who took me from my mother’s womb; My praise is continually of You.
Psalm 71:7–8 NASB95
7 I have become a marvel to many, For You are my strong refuge. 8 My mouth is filled with Your praise And with Your glory all day long.
Psalm 71:9–10 NASB95
9 Do not cast me off in the time of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength fails. 10 For my enemies have spoken against me; And those who watch for my life have consulted together,
Psalm 71:11–12 NASB95
11 Saying, “God has forsaken him; Pursue and seize him, for there is no one to deliver.” 12 O God, do not be far from me; O my God, hasten to my help!
Psalm 71:13–14 NASB95
13 Let those who are adversaries of my soul be ashamed and consumed; Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor, who seek to injure me. 14 But as for me, I will hope continually, And will praise You yet more and more.
Psalm 71:15–16 NASB95
15 My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness And of Your salvation all day long; For I do not know the sum of them. 16 I will come with the mighty deeds of the Lord God; I will make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone.
Psalm 71:17–18 NASB95
17 O God, You have taught me from my youth, And I still declare Your wondrous deeds. 18 And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come.
Psalm 71:19–20 NASB95
19 For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You? 20 You who have shown me many troubles and distresses Will revive me again, And will bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
Psalm 71:21–22 NASB95
21 May You increase my greatness And turn to comfort me. 22 I will also praise You with a harp, Even Your truth, O my God; To You I will sing praises with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.
Psalm 71:23–24 NASB95
23 My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to You; And my soul, which You have redeemed. 24 My tongue also will utter Your righteousness all day long; For they are ashamed, for they are humiliated who seek my hurt.

The Situation

This passage in many bibles is entitled “prayer of an old man for deliverance.” The situation of the Psalmist demands help from the hope that the Psalmist has.
He cries out for help, deliver me, rescue me , save me (v.2)
Do not cast me off, nor forsake me (v.9)
Do not be far, please hasten to my help (v.12)
His enemies seek to ruin him, to destroy him (v.4, 10-11, 13)
the situation is bleak, he cries out for deliverance, rescue, salvation. He calls for God not to cast him off, forsake or even be far from him.
He has a history with God, he has reached old age (v.9)
He acknowledges that God has shown him troubles and distresses throughout his life (v.20)
He, because of history knows the Lord God is his hope (v.5) and puts his hope in the Lord (v.14)
Psalm 71:14 NASB95
14 But as for me, I will hope continually, And will praise You yet more and more.
Even in the midst of trials, tribulations, hard times, difficult times, trying times our outlook matters. Where is your hope? Remember as the psalmist said
Psalm 71:5 NASB95
5 For You are my hope; O Lord God, You are my confidence from my youth.
You are my hope, my confidence!

Our Hope - Our strong refuge

Refuge what a great word, it well describes our Mighty God who is our hope. Refuge (n) A condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger or trouble.
The Lord is our rock and fortress (v.3)
Psalm 71:3 NASB95
3 Be to me a rock of habitation to which I may continually come; You have given commandment to save me, For You are my rock and my fortress.
David, assuming he is the writer as some have said made this psalm very personal. Here is an example, notice the “me” and the “my” here.
My hope, my mighty God is my strong refuge (v.7; Nah1:7; Pro18:10; Ps18:30; Ps91:4)
Psalm 71:7 NASB95
7 I have become a marvel to many, For You are my strong refuge.
Because it started personal it became apparent to the many.
Nahum 1:7 NASB95
7 The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.
He is a stronghold in the day of trouble (Nah1:7)
Proverbs 18:10 NASB95
10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe.
He is a strong tower that the righteous find safety in (Pro18:10)
He is a shield (Ps18:30)
Psalm 18:30 NASB95
30 As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the Lord is tried; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
He covers us under the shelter of his wings (Ps91:1-4)
Psalm 91:1–2 NASB95
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!”
Psalm 91:3–4 NASB95
3 For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper And from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
His faithfulness is a shield to you!
He is our very help in trouble (Ps46:1-3)
Psalm 46:1–2 NASB95
1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
Psalm 46:3 NASB95
3 Though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah.
Notice in the midst of the quaking mountains, the roaring water, He is our help and we do not have to fear!
He is continually (always) available (Ps71:3)
So we can draw near to Him (Heb4:16)
Hebrews 4:16 NASB95
16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
So, we can draw near, and draw near with confidence
He draws near those who draw near to Him (Jm4:8)
We have accessibility due to his availability where we can have peace and provision (Php4:5-7)
I have give you this passage
Philippians 4:5–6 NASB95
5 Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
Philippians 4:7 NASB95
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(Transition) Our hope, our strong refuge is even more than just that, may we continue to look.

Our Hope will sustain & strengthen

I know we have a lack of scripture today, and we cannot stop now, there is still more about our Hope, which is Jesus Christ (1Tim1:1) that we can glean from this morning.
Psalm 71:6 NASB95
6 By You I have been sustained from my birth; You are He who took me from my mother’s womb; My praise is continually of You.
He sustains, so I will praise continually (Ps71:6)
You are His marvelous works (Ps139:1-16) You are His workmanship created for good works (Eph2:10)
His lovingkindness is better than life (Ps63:3)
Psalm 63:3 NASB95
3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips will praise You.
Great is His faithfulness (Lam3:22-24)
Lamentations 3:22–23 NASB95
22 The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:24 NASB95
24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.”
Great is His faithfulness, His lovingkindness, His compassion, no wonder why He is our hope and we can have hope in Him!
We can hope in or hope because he will never leave nor forsake us(Heb13:5-6)
(Transition) - we have covered his sustaining us, but now may I move on to our hope who is our strength who provides the strength we need.
He will provide the strength we need (Ps71:18)
His strength and beauty are in His sanctuary (Ps96:6)
He gives strength to the weary (Isa40:29-31)
Isaiah 40:29–30 NASB95
29 He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. 30 Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly,
Isaiah 40:31 NASB95
31 Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.
Not only does He give strength, look what more can we know about our Mighty God who is our Hope.
He is strength and a shield to those who trust Hi (Ps28:7)
Psalm 28:7 NASB95
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.
Now bringing it into the N.T. because we know those things we can know.
He strengthens us so as to do all things (Php4:7)
That in all things God may be glorified! (1Pt4:11)
I should give you this one, for it is by His provision as our hope that in turn He may be glorified in and through all things.
1 Peter 4:11 NASB95
11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
(Transition) - Our hope, hope in the worst of times, where the enemy wants to destroy, in the idst of trials, tribulations that take any supposed strength, we can have hope, real hope, strengthening hope, assuring hope, enduring hope that provides us safety through the storms and works out all things even in the worst of things.
Our hope works out all things (Ps71:19-20, 2)
Psalm 71:19–20 NASB95
19 For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You? 20 You who have shown me many troubles and distresses Will revive me again, And will bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
and have to back up and give you another one; he wants us to put our hope in Him, in His righteousness and to call on Him!
Psalm 71:2 NASB95
2 In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; Incline Your ear to me and save me.
In an effort to keep this to a reasonable length of time, let me give you a few more to consider briefly.
He can take a bad situation and change it (Isa61:3)
Isaiah 61:3 NASB95
3 To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
He can take what was meant for evil, well, He can change that too (Gen50:20)
Joseph in dealing with his brothers.
So we can know He works out all things (Rom8:28)
Knowledge, belief, faith are important, so that we can know he works out all things.
Works it out for those who trust Him (Pro3:5-6)
For those who trust Him and lean not on their own understanding.
He is able to deliver thee (Ps71:2)
coming back to our passage this morning.
Psalm 71:2 NASB95
2 In Your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; Incline Your ear to me and save me.
From enemies (Ps18:17)
Psalm 18:17 NASB95
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, And from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
From fears (Ps34:4)
Psalm 34:4 NASB95
4 I sought the Lord, and He answered me, And delivered me from all my fears.
From troubles (Ps34:17-19)
Psalm 34:17–18 NASB95
17 The righteous cry, and the Lord hears And delivers them out of all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:19 NASB95
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all.
(Invitation slide: Jesus is our hope)
According to our Psalm today our Mighty God; Our hope is our comforter (v.21); so may we turn to Him (v.1) for he will deliver us (v.4); So may we hope in our hope in praise (v.14) in joy (v.23) and in speech (v.24) - may it start in surrender
(invitation slide2: I surrender-1) (expand on this as the invitation) (Song) (Prayer)
