SCRIPTURE

Mark 6:45–52 NLT
45 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and head across the lake to Bethsaida, while he sent the people home. 46 After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. 47 Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. 48 He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. 50 They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” 51 Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, 52 for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.
Peter’s account…
John 6:16–21 NLT
16 That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him. 17 But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum. 18 Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough. 19 They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified, 20 but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!” 21 Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!
John’s account...
Matthew 14:22–32 NLT
22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” 27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” 28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” 29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.
Matthew’s account

SETUP

Three Different Accounts of the Same Story
This doesn’t invalidate but rather validates the authenticity of this story, the Gospels, and the Bible itself
Account 1 - From Mark
Mark was orated by Peter...
Why did Peter leave out the story of him walking on the water?
I think it is because when he reflected on that story all he saw was him sinking
“Why would I want to tell people about my failures?”
Account 2 - From John
John was one of the original disciples and wrote the Gospel of John
Why did John leave out the story of Peter walking on the water?
I think it was because he didn’t want to give anymore credit to Peter than possible...
Peter and John were insanely competitive with one another
John 20:3–4 NLT
3 Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. 4 They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
“Why would I tell people how Peter was braver than me?”
Account 3 - From Matthew
Matthew was also one of the original disciples and wrote the Gospel of Matthew (Levi)
Matthew was a tax collector - a CPA
He was committed to the facts as he saw them!
Matthew gives us a very detailed account of this story along with the piece that the other 2 leave out
Peter walked on the water with Jesus sinking in the middle of his walk.

HOW YOU CHOOSE TO SEE YOUR STORY NOW WILL DETERMINE HOW YOU WILL SEE IT ONE DAY.

How will you see it?

SUBSTANCE

STORMS: You are either in the middle of one, coming out of one, or going into one.

Jesus Brought Me Here
The storm came BECAUSE they were in the will of God!
Matthew 14:22 NLT
22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home.
There are storms of correction:
Jonah
Your life?
There are storms of perfection:
I followed Jesus, and He led me into a storm
This isn’t the first time it has happened, and it won’t be the last...
We often think that following Jesus leads to “smooth sailing,” but rarely is that the case…
When we find ourselves in the storm because we obeyed Jesus, we must remember that He brought us here and will take care of us here!
Jesus Is Praying For Me
Matthew 14:23 NLT
23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.
Romans 8:34 NLT
34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
Hebrews 4:14–16 NLT
14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
He sees your need, He knows your fears, and He is in control of
Jesus Will Come To Me
Matthew 14:23–26 NLT
23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”
It’s easy to feel like Jesus has deserted you when hard times come...
David felt this way often as he writes in the Psalms
Even Paul, possibly the greatest person of faith besides Jesus himself, felt like this...
2 Corinthians 1:8 NLT
8 We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it.
Jesus ALWAYS comes to us in the storms of life...
Isaiah 43:2 NLT
2 When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.
Jesus came “WALKING ON THE WATER.”
The very storm you think is going to kill you, Jesus is using as a staircase to get to you!
How often have your storms brought you closer to Jesus?
They didn’t recognize Jesus in that moment… Why not?
1. You see what you look for...
Expect the worst, see the worst, experience the worst…
2. They didn’t expect to find Him in their pain and fear...
This is when God does His best work
Matthew 14:27 NLT
27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!”
SOAK THIS VERSE IN!
If you are worried about _______ = Take courage because He is here in the middle of it!
Jesus Will Help Me Grow
Matthew 14:28 NLT
28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
When we follow Jesus, we never arrive
...apart from the day where we leave this earthly body behind and enter into His eternal presence...
“If you’re not dead, He’s not done.”
We never stop growing, we never stop going through storms, we never stop being stretched…
Faith is not believing in spite of evidence, but obeying in spite of consequence.
Jesus Will See Me Through
Matthew 14:29 NLT
29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.
When Jesus says “Come,” His word will accomplish its intended purpose!

SHUTDOWN

Matthew 14:30–32 NLT
30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.
Doubt = “Looking uncertainly at two different ways.”
Will the storm sink me?
Will Jesus save me?
How will you see it?
Will you see the storm as God abandoning you or as His tool to bless you, grow you, and show Himself to you?
Will you see your failure as something to hide or as something to show how good God is even when we mess up?
Will you try to divide your attention just in case Jesus doesn’t save you, or will you fully focus on Him?
