Matthew 5:21–22 NKJV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

Intro

Murder - Phoneuo: Intentional with premeditation.
Murder is on the rise in our country.
Murder due to:
Violent crimes
Domestic issue
Love Triangles
Gang Warfare
Arguments, fights, and conflicts
and misunderstandings
and when we throw abortions n the number is astronomical!
Murder has been a problem with man from the very beginning. We find the first murder in human history in Genesis 4:6-10.
Genesis 4:6–10 NKJV
So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
Even Cain expected retaliation for the crime he committed:
Genesis 4:13–14 NKJV
And Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear! Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”
From Cain and throughout history murder was and is a problem amongst mankind. While God prohibited death as a retribution for Abel’s death eventually God set forth laws for death.
Genesis 9:6 NKJV
“Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man.
God would go on to tell man that death is forbidden and punishable by death. 6th of the 10 commandments.
Exodus 20:13 NKJV
“You shall not murder.
Exodus 21:12 NKJV
“He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.
But man continues to murder then and continues to murder now. It’s no wonder because Satan is busy and continues to solicit all kinds of evil to make people angry! Satan is the author of evil!!
John 8:44 NKJV
You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
Jesus refuted the hypocrisy of the Pharisees who questioned Jesus about transgressing the commandments of the elders as it pertained to not washing their hands before they at the bread. In Matthew 15 he said:
Matthew 15:15–20 NKJV
Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.” So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding? Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”
People have the mind murderers because of a degenerated heart.
Not stress
Not social deprivation
But because of people not following God and as a result following Satan! God has turned them over to a debased mind!
Romans 1:28–32 NKJV
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
God hates murder!
Proverbs 6:16–17 NKJV
These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,
Innocent blood!
Not criminals
Not self-defense
But innocent blood!
Murder is a work of the flesh and unrepentant murderers will by no means enter into the Kingdom of Heaven!
Revelation 22:14–15 NKJV
Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.
And by now I’m sure many of us are thinking murder is sick and I’m glad that I am not a murderer!
But I give us all a warning this morning that we need to be careful because we may be aligning ourselves with the scribes and Pharisees and Jesus said our righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees.
You see the scribes and the Pharisees were white washed tombs who were clean on the outside but filthy on the inside.
They bragged about the fact they did not commit sins as we will see over the next few weeks.
But while they bragged Jesus wanted them to understand that while they may not commit the physical sin of murder they had committed in some instances MURDER IN THE MIND!
The scribes and pharisees said We have never broken the 6th commandment! We say we have never broken the 6th commandment! But Jesus is saying but have you done it in the mind!
In verse 5:21 notice:
Matthew 5:21 NKJV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
You have heard meaning from rabbinic teachers
People could not read
The could not read Hebrew
Because of Babylonian captivity they had began to speak aramaic.
The Pharisees held people in captivity because they could not read for themselves so they were given the sense of it from the Rabbinic teachers.
Their traditional system
They had been taught simply not to kill
Even though You shall not murder comes from Exodus 20:13 they had turned it external, superficial, and it worldly.
The judgement they are talking about is the local court system that God put into place to take care of crimes.
Deuteronomy 16:18 NKJV
“You shall appoint judges and officers in all your gates, which the Lord your God gives you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with just judgment.
THEY HAD TAKEN GOD OUT OF THE EQUATION AND ONLY WANTED THE PEOPLE TO FEAR THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES OF WHICH THEY WERE HEAVILY ASSOCIATED!
But in verse 22 Jesus put the emphasis BACK ON GOD!!!!
Matthew 5:22 NKJV
But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.
BUT I SAY TO YOU!!
Whoever is angry with his brother without a cause
Jesus just told the disciples that God is not only concerned with the act but with the mind of the person that commits the act!
Murder with a legitimate righteous cause is just as bad murder itself in they eyes of God!!!!
Even if we don’t do the killing we are murderers!
1 John 3:15 NKJV
Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
Hate is an extension of anger and leads to murder!!!!
Psalm 51:6 NKJV
Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.
If the truth was known about the minds of the scribes and pharisees they would be condemned!
Are in danger of the judgement!
The judgement that Jesus is talking about here is also the local court!
But the issue is it would be rare and narrowly impossible for a person to be condemned in the courts because of their anger if it did not lead to the physical act!

WHOEVER SAYS RACA

The Word Raca is untranslatable!

WHOEVER SAYS YOU FOOL!

Jesus said to the Pharisees you fool
Fool comes from the Greek word mora which means to rebel! And if someone rebels against God they are foolish and so it is warranted! But for someone to say you fool and someone has not rebelled against God it is in vain and sinful!
Psalm 14:1 NKJV
The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.
Matthew 23:17 NKJV
Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
Matthew Jesus Teaches About Anger / 5:21–26 / 52

The word translated “hell” is Gehenna. The name derived from the Valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where children had been sacrificed by fire to the pagan god Molech (see 2 Kings 23:10; 2 Chronicles 28:3; Jeremiah 7:31; 32:35). Later, during the reign of good king Josiah, the valley had become the city’s garbage dump where fire burned constantly to destroy the garbage and the worms infesting it. Gehenna, hell, is the place of “fire that shall never be quenched” (Mark 9:43, 45, 47–48 NKJV) prepared for the devil, his angels, and all those who do not know Christ (25:41; Revelation 20:9–10). This is the final and eternal state of the wicked after the resurrection and the Last Judgment.

2 Chronicles 28:3 NKJV
He burned incense in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and burned his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.
2 Kings 23:10 NKJV
And he defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter pass through the fire to Molech.
