Causing a Commotion
Causing a Commotion
Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on earth. --John Wesley
I read this quote to you last week.
What does it look like to fear nothing but sin desire nothing but God?
What does it look like to be totally in?
When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too,
Are we making our enemy nervous?
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Are Being the Church
Acts 17
Embrace your faith daily
Paul and Silas traveled day by day sharing their faith and being obedient
But when the Jews from Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul at Berea, they came there too, agitating and upsetting the crowds.
Embrace your faith daily
Our faith has to be lived out daily
It is a muscle that must be worked
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.
2. Endure adversity
We bring light to darkness - it is not always wanted
But the Jews became jealous, and they brought together some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. Attacking Jason’s house, they searched for them to bring them out to the public assembly.
2. Endure adversity
We have been warned if it hates Him hates us
Question - not facing any adversity, are you doing anything to warrant it?
3. Expose false beliefs
Remember light in darkness - light exposes
Our lives expose the false belief system today
Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, “People of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect. For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed, ‘To an Unknown God.’ Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.
3. Expose false beliefs
Don’t think we don’t have idols today
They have become more sophisticated
Root of all idolatry -
Security, Significance, Satisfaction
Where do we find those things
Show up in the surface as:
Items - Duties - Others - Longing - Sufferings
Anytime we long for something apart from God, fear something more than God, or trust in something other than God to make us happy, fulfilled, or secure, we worship a false god.
Ken Sande
Once we reveal the emptiness of idols we must point them to that which will fill
4. Enrich people with the Gospel
Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a large number of God-fearing Greeks, as well as a number of the leading women.
4. Enrich people with the Gospel
Nate Saint made this observation
“And people who do not know the Lord ask why in the world we waste our lives as missionaries. They forget that they too are expending their lives… and when the bubble has burst they will have nothing of eternal significance to show for the years they have wasted.” -Nate Saint
We have that which heals, fills, restores, changes
We do not save anyone, but everyone deserves a chance to hear the Gospel and decide for themselves.
The Gospel is the only thing that will bring change.
Causing a Commotion
Causing a Commotion
I want my life to cause a commotion
“You can do something other than working with God in His purpose, but it will always be something lesser, and you couldn’t come up with something better.” -Steve Hawthorne
What are you doing that will have lasting impact
What are you doing to turn the world right side up?
It starts with the Gospel - and goes from there.
