Key Verse:
11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.
A Certain Place
A Certain Place
Gen 11 The Story begins
Gen 11 Abraham was a decedent of Shem (Noah's Son)
Gen 12 Abram was instructed to leave his household (Gen 12:1)
1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
and he was given a promise (Gen 12:2-3).
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
Abram (high father) takes Lot with him, and they set out to Canaan.
Gen 12:7 God promises Abram that he would give the land of Canaan to his offspring.
7 And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him.
Gen 12:8 is the first mention of the town Beth-el, but Abram did not know it as such, he would have known the town as Luz.
Famine strikes the land Abram goes to Egypt, has his issues with lying.
Gen 13 Abram comes back to the place where he had initially settled a place between Beth-el and Ai
Chapter 13 is significant for the fact that Lot and Abram separated, but the Lord give Abram another promise
14 And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.
Gen 14 Saga of Abram rescuing his Nephew begins (first from King Kedorlaomer), it would not be the last.
Gen 15 Count the stars that's how your offspring will be; During a burnt offering a prophecy that for 400 years the descendants would be strangers in a country not their own.
Gen 16 Hagar and Ishmael - trying to make the promise come to pass by their own means
Gen 17, 18 Abram (high father) has his name changed to Abraham (father of many), Sarai (my princess) to Sarah (mother of nations), covenant of circumcision.
Gen 18, 19 Finishes off with Rescuing Lot Volume 2 and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
Gen 21 Isaac is born, Hagar and Ishmael sent away
Gen 22 Abraham is tested, proved, attempt to learn the true nature of something
Gen 24 Introduces Rebekah into the picture
Gen 25 Abraham takes another wife has more children, finally dies and the story of Jacob comes into view.
Prophecy goes forth:
19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac:
20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
21 And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to inquire of the Lord.
23 And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, And two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; And the one people shall be stronger than the other people; And the elder shall serve the younger.
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
Chapter 25 ends with Jacob taking his brothers birthright the cost of which was some lentil stew.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
Gen 26 Isaac deals with Abimelek just like his father. The LORD promised Isaac the same as he did Abraham.
24 And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.
Gen 27 Isaac was getting old. Jacob takes Esau’s blessing in the most overtly deceitful way. But that is how we read it. If we look back , at Gen 25:23
23 And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, And two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; And the one people shall be stronger than the other people; And the elder shall serve the younger.
God told Rebekah, the older shall serve the younger.
Why would she not act on her younger son’s behalf? This almost appears to be similar of an action that Sarah took.
Sometimes you have well meaning people who try to “Help GOD out”…Good intentions don’t always have good results.
But before we think that Rebekah had a favorite, we must look back and see that she entreated the LORD when she was pregnant, and the LORD spoke to her.
At any rate, Jacob receives the blessing from his father and his brother Esau sought to kill him
41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.
Gen 28 begins with Jacob being blessed and then sent by his father to Paddan Aram, Don’t marry a Canaanite woman
Of course Esau already married to canaanite women, takes wives from Ishmael in addition to his Canaanite wives he already had.
10 And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.
11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
Up to this point, Jacob’s life had been influenced by his family.
I don’t know how Jacob grew up.
Hey pass the salt: did you hear about the largest heap of salt lick in the plains of Jordan.
He likely was told of the promises to his grandfather.
His life was highly influenced by his mother and father
Familial strife seemed to prompt his departure.
What Jacob thought was a trip back home to get a wife, was directly ordained by GOD.
It was important for Jacob to get to that CERTAIN PLACE
But he finally finds himself at a certain place:
1. LN 80.1–80.4 place, site, i.e., a spatial area of any size (very topographically large to a few square inches), inside or outside 2. home, dwelling, formally, place, i.e., a place where one lives and dwells, with a focus on the existence in a
Sometimes we do not understand the circumstances that have occurred in our lives, but it is the LORDs purpose and intention for us to get to that certain place
immediate past: COVID, surgery, dog biting
it was difficult to see my brothers and sisters in the Lord suffer, see my family suffer
further past: how you became part of this body
prophecy 20 years ago
You cannot qualify yourself
You cannot disqualify yourself
How do you get to the certain place?
Obedience to the WORD of GOD - Jacob obeyed
Obedience to the MAN of GOD, which is the voice of GOD to this body
Why is it important that we get to a certain place?
So God can personally and collectively reaffirm the promises that he has prophesied on this body
Indirect vs personal - God was not wanting to be the GOD of Jacobs father or Jacobs grandfather, but he wanted to show Jacob who he was personally.
so he had to get him away from what he knew, in a way that could not be orchestrated by no one else to be able to speak to Jacob.
12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
The same promise is given to Jacob
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.
Surely: with strong asseverative force:
a. surely, truly, especially at beginning of a speech (stronger & more decided than אַךְ) Gn 28:16 Ex 2:14 1 S 15:32 Is 40:7; 45:15 Je 3:23(); 4:10; 8:8. In 1 K 11:2 אָכֵן stands unusually; and פֶּן־ (cf. 𝔊 𝔖 𝔗 should prob. be read (so Klo).
b. emphasizing a contrast, but indeed, but in fact, especially after אָמַרְתִּי I said or thought, expressing the reality, in opp. to what had been wrongly imagined[1]
17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
afraid, dreadful:
1. be afraid, be frightened
2. revere, venerate, i.e., show profound respect for one, that borders on fear of the object (Lev 19:32); (nif) be awesome, dreadful (Ps 47:3[EB 2]), note: for nif ptcp. as an a, see 5682.5;
3. LN 87.19–87.57 (qal) respect, revere, i.e., show high status and honor to one in authority even bordering on fear, without necessarily worshiping as deity[1]
18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
How do we know that Jacob recieved the word of GOD?
He set up a memorial
The power was not in the memorial, it was in God
I believe that the LORD is saying to us…he sees the hearts of those that he has brought to a certain place
He knows that some of your hearts are RIGHT and READY and you revere the word of GOD that comes from our BISHOP.
Yet some of you cannot even look up because you do not regard the word of our BISHOP, THE MINISTRY, THE INTERCESSORS, THE PROPHECIES as having any value.
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
CONCLUSION:
There will be words that go forth from our BISHOP in the next week or so…to those that these words are spoken over please reverance those words, directions and instructions.
