More than just a sojourner in somebody else’s land

Nowhere else I can call home

Identity - Aotearoa

International - haka
Injustice in our land
Life expectancy 10% lower
half as likely to own your own home
more than twice as likely to live in material hardship
50% more likely to be the victim of crime
7 times more likely to be charged with a crime if you have no criminal record

What’s that got to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

Jesus took Isaiah 58 and related it to our place in his Kingdom
Matthew 25:37-40 Parable of Sheep and the goats
Still us and them
Te Maungarongo - the Unifier (p.21) - Jesus Christ has made us one.
Jews did not become gentiles, gentiles did not become Jews, yet the two became one. Threefold cord.
Tena koe - Jesus sees people.
weakest deserves most honour

What can we do about it?

2nd temple Judaism - colonial power
Maccabees
Zealots - Judas
Jesus is different - living with integrity
Doesn’t shy away fromt eh truth, but lives into the kingdom, even in the brokenness of society
Celebrate our identity
As children of God through our faith in Jesus Christ
As children of this land where God has placed us.
Dignity and Mana - clothing and feeding
Humility and generosity
Fruit of the Spirit
