Aspects:

Starting with wounds b/c we will be most familiar with them

Scope

Big things and small
lifelong wounds and everyday wounds.
the most tragic and the most temporary

Walking through the healing path.

Wound occurs
A spiritual transaction takes place
An injustice is created
A debt is owed
(but it’s never that simple, b/c we are all sinful)
If we were perfectly redeemed we would immediately run to the father and forgive the sin. (like my kids running to me)
Awareness of the Wound:
God Given Emotions
The Role of Emotions / Reactivity
How do you know you have unresolved wounds (spoiler — we all do)?
reactivity, why does this thing set you off?
Illustration: Pointing finger at my sister
Can’t get past something
what triggers you?
Example: these things will be the most stark in the abused, especially sexual abuse, but it is functioning at all levels by degrees
Confession of the Hurt
This can be the hardest part
Acknowledging the wound, the hurt and the affect
This is telling the truth about your story
It is honoring your story
Grieving of the wound
Feeling the pain
this is not just immediately injecting morphine into your system to numb the pain.
Feeling the anger
Feeling the sadness of the situation
This is what we are not good at in our culture. We want to avoid pain at all costs, it’s why addictions are so prevalent.
Pain tells you that you are still alive, that you are still a human being
It is in the pain that redemption can take root
Lamenting
Giving your story over to God, recognizing that he is in control, that he is good, that he is powerful, that he is loving.
This is a process, a hard choice to make
Forgiving the Sin
walking through this process we’ve been talking about the last two weeks.
giving your story to God
releasing them from the debt
absorbing the cost
pulling the nail out, putting it on the cross
Cleansing from the sin/of the wound
next step is cleansing
The nail has been pulled out
it can now be cleaned, disinfected
bound up
healed.
This then opens the door to reconciliation
It may involve restitution
It may have lasting consequences
But you will begin healing

By his wounds we are healed

Isaiah 53:5 ESV5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
1 John 1:5–10 ESV5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Psalm 4:4–5 ESV4 Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah 5 Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord.
Psalm 147:3 ESV3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 41:4 ESV4 As for me, I said, “O Lord, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against you!”
Isaiah 30:26 ESV26 Moreover, the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when the Lord binds up the brokenness of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.
Isaiah 57:14–21 ESV14 And it shall be said, “Build up, build up, prepare the way, remove every obstruction from my people’s way.” 15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. 16 For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; for the spirit would grow faint before me, and the breath of life that I made. 17 Because of the iniquity of his unjust gain I was angry, I struck him; I hid my face and was angry, but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart. 18 I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners, 19 creating the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace, to the far and to the near,” says the Lord, “and I will heal him. 20 But the wicked are like the tossing sea; for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mire and dirt. 21 There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”
Isaiah 57:14–21 CSB
14 He said, “Build it up, build it up, prepare the way, remove every obstacle from my people’s way.” 15 For the High and Exalted One, who lives forever, whose name is holy, says this: “I live in a high and holy place, and with the oppressed and lowly of spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the oppressed. 16 For I will not accuse you forever, and I will not always be angry; for then the spirit would grow weak before me, even the breath, which I have made. 17 Because of his sinful greed I was angry, so I struck him; I was angry and hid; but he went on turning back to the desires of his heart. 18 I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners, 19 creating words of praise.” The Lord says, “Peace, peace to the one who is far or near, and I will heal him. 20 But the wicked are like the storm-tossed sea, for it cannot be still, and its water churns up mire and muck. 21 There is no peace for the wicked,” says my God.
