Romans 7:24-8:10
Romans 8:1
1. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus,
a. Condemnation n. — a legal decision of guilty in a criminal case; often with the ensuing punishment understood.
b. Now adv. — at the present moment.
2. who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
a. Borrowed from verse 4.
Five Reasons that There’s Hope for Your Past:
1.) Jesus delivers us from our past (Romans 7:24-25).
a. Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
b. Romans 7:25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
2.) The law of the Spirit supersedes the law of sin (Romans 8:2).
a. Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
i. The law of gravity versus the law of aerodynamics.
3.) Jesus overcame sin (Romans 8:3).
a. Romans 8:3a For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh,
i. Romans 7:12 Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.
ii. Romans 7:13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.
iii. Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
b. Romans 8:3b God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh,
i. Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
c. Romans 8:3c on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,
4.) The law is fulfilled by living according to the Spirit (Romans 8:4-9).
a. Romans 8:4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
i. Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
ii. Galatians 5:23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
b. Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
c. Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
d. Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
e. Romans 8:8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
f. Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
i. John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
ii. John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
iii. John 3:7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
5.) We have a new of life (Romans 8:10).
a. Romans 8:10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
i. Romans 7:6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
