What was most shocking about the story of feeding the 5,000 to Mark’s first readers? Not that Jesus miraculously fed so many, or that 12 baskets were taken up. The most shocking things is in v35-37
Mark 6:35–37 ESV
And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”
The words “You give them” are emphatic - You!
Maybe they expected quails and manna, or ravens with meat like Elijah, or a never diminishing sandwhich to pass around - but never you do it!
