“COME AND SEE”

John 20:30,31

Introduction: The reason for the church existing is to evangelize the world. Much has been spoken and written concerning the way we can best accomplish this task. A lot of personal work material is being prepared and sold. Methods of personal work are numerous and varied. All of this has its place. But the best place to turn to for instruction in evangelism of any kind is to the New Testament. In this study together we shall be concerned primarily with the gospel according to John.

I. Purpose of the Gospel According to John

A. John 20:30,31

1. “That ye might believe.”

2. This passage sums up the reason for John writing his gospel.

B. Notice the focal point of John’s summary

1. “Signs and wonders.”

2. The person and work of Jesus.

3. This needs to be the focal point of any type of evangelism.

II. Examples from the Gospel According to John

A. John 1:39

1. Two of the disciples of John the Baptizer followed Jesus.

2. They asked him where he lived. (v. 3.)  Jesus said, “Come and See.”

B. John 1:41,42

1. Andrew finds his brother Peter.

2. Tells him he has found the Messiah.

3. “He brought him to Jesus.”

4. What simpler way? Let him see for himself!

C. John 1:116

1. Philip finds Nathaniel.

2. Tells him about the Messiah.

3. Nathaniel asks, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?”

             4. Philip replies, “Come and see!”

   D. John 4:29

1. The Samaritan woman speaks with Jesus at the well.

2. She returns to the City.

3. “Come, see a man, which told me all things that I ever did.”

E. John 20:29

1. Thomas, who was not present when Jesus first came to the disciples after his resurrection, was doubting.

2. He sees Jesus, and the nail scars, and the pierced side.

3. He believes.

4. Jesus says, “...blessed are they that have not seen, yet have believed...”

F. In order to have faith in Christ, or to lead others to have faith in Him, we need to examine the evidence!

III. The Evidence (John 5: 31—47)

A. John the Baptizer (5:31-35)

1. John bore witness of Jesus (John 1:32—34).

                           2. John did not claim to be the Christ, but the forerunner of Him!

B. His works (5:36)

1. The miracles that Jesus performed were an overwhelming testimony to Jesus’ character and   claims.

a. He healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and raised the dead.

   b. What greater proof of divine power? (John 3:2) (Nicodemus)

 2. When John sent from prison to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah, what was Jesus’ answer? THE SON OF GOD!! (Mt. 11: 2-6)

              C. The Father (vv. 37,38)

                          1. The Father bore witness to Jesus:

a.       At his baptism (Mt. 3:17)

b.       At the mount of transfiguration. (Mt. 17:5)

c.       In the fact of the resurrection. (Rev. 1:11)

2.     Jesus’ purpose was to glorify the Father. (John 17:3,4)

 3.     The Father also bore witness to the Son.

               D. The Scriptures (v. 39)

1.      Probably referring to the prophets.

2.      The Jews thought this was where their hope was.

                         3.     But this is what gives, again, overwhelming evidence for Jesus.

                                 a. Born in Bethlehem. (Micah 5:2)

                                 b. Born of a virgin. (Isa. 7:14)

                                 c. His rejection and suffering. (Isa. 53)

                                 d. Countless other references!

                        4. Truly, this is a favorable testimony.

E.       Moses (45-47)

1.       They honored Moses.

2.       But Moses also referred to the “Prophet”. (Deut. 18:15)

3.       This is the prophet the Pharisees were speaking of to John the Baptizer (John 1:21,25).

Conclusion: We invite you to “Come and See.” Evaluate the evidence; look at the facts! Truly, this man WAS The Son of God!!
