Introduction:

Let’s begin this morning with two questions:
What does it mean to be good?
How are we to be good?

Text: Micah 6:8

Micah 6:8 ESV
8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Background:

Micah preached during the time of Isaiah the prophet, during the reigns of Jotham and Hezekiah. Micah preached against being unfair and taught that God wanted His people to do what is good. Because of this, King Hezekiah turned from his sin and followed God and trusted in Him.
Before Micah preached, people would just do things for God or tell Him they loved Him just to get stuff from God. It’s like saying to someone that you will be their friend if they let you play with their toys. You don’t really care about them, just their toys. In the same way, the people of judah wanted God to bless them with all kinds of things but they didn’t really want to obey God.
Micah then tells them that being good can only happen when God tells us what is good, then we do it just because we love God. Here’s what God says what is good?

1. Do Justice:

a) know right from wrong and always do right

b) to treat everyone fair

2. Love Kindness:

a) to not think of your self better then someone else

b) to put others needs before your own

3. Walk Humbly With Your God:

a) Walk Humbly

1) shows that being good is doing something not just talking about it

2) realizing that God is bigger, smarter, and more powerful, so He is in charge and not me

3) because He is in charge, I must obey Him

4) one of the first ways to obey God is to turn from our sins and trust in Jesus His Son to save us.

b) With Your God

1. you are not walking alone

2. God, through trusting Jesus Christ to save you becomes your father, your God

3. Walking with God in obedience makes great sense because He is God who knows all things, is all powerful, and knows where He is going.

BTW, when we walk humbly with our God, He helps us know what is right and wrong, and how to treat each other kindly.
