PUT OFF/ PUT ON
As believers and followers of Jesus, there are some things we are to put off in our lives and there are some things that we are to put on—Paul uses the language of undressing and dressing in terms of our attitudes and behaviors.
Colossians 3:9–10 — Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self (your old ways) with its practices 10 and have put on the new self (a new way of life), which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator (that is Jesus).
We should increasingly reflect the One we know and follow by what we put off and put on.
This INVOLVES OUR MIND
REQUIRES EFFORT
INCLUDES STRUGGLING
But HOW DOES THIS WORK?
You choose to relate to Jesus for who He is—
Set your mind on things above (3:1-2)
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts—
Colossians 3:15
Let the Word of Christ dwell in you RICHLY
Colossians 3:16
Do EVERYHING in the name of the LORD JESUS
Colossians 3:17
WALK IN JESUS (Colossians 2:6-7)
How does this relate to HUSBANDS AND WIVES? (vs.18-19)
AS HUSBANDS AND WIVES, what do we PUT OFF/ON?
Colossians 3:5 — 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: SEXUAL IMMORALITY, impurity, passion, evil desire, and COVETOUSNESS, which is idolatry.
Colossians 3:8–9 — 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath (RAGE), malice (WICKEDNESS, INTENT TO DO HARM), slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Ephesians 4:29 — Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
9 DO NOT LIE TO ONE ANOTHER, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices
PUT OFF/PUT ON
Colossians 3:12–14 — 12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness (GOODNESS), humility, meekness (GENTLENESS, STRENGTH UNDER CONTROL), and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
PUT OFF/PUT ON
Colossians 3:12–14 — 12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
This should be enough . . . BUT PAUL ADDS
Colossians 3:18–19 — 18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
REMEMBER GOD’s DESIGN for the HOME
God’s design for the home (from the beginning was for the husband/father to lead the home); not as a dictator, but as a loving leader and advocate.
No one leads?
Colossians 3:18–19 — 18 Wives, submit (place under) to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
THINK ROLES
This isn’t about inferiority or superiority—never was, it was always about leading for the sake of the whole—
Someone will lead in the home—
husbands, it is your role to do so
Ephesians 5:22–32 — 22 Wives, submit to your OWN husbands (NOT MALE/FEMALE THING), as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head (take the lead) of the wife even as Christ is the head (take the lead) of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Does this include dishonoring God/following Christ?
Submit as to the LORD.
25 Husbands, (AS YOU LEAD) love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her (SELF-SACRIFICING LOVE) , 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. (JESUS ACTS FOR THE CHURCH’S LARGER GOOD—AT HIS OWN EXPENSE).
28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.
Husbands are to lead for the sake of the home/family
31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
REMEMBER GOD’s DESIGN for the HOME
Colossians 3:18–19 — 18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
REMEMBER TO DRESS APPROPRIATELY
Colossians 3:12–14 — 12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
