Text:

Matthew 9:27–31 AV
And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.
Two blind men heard about Jesus and followed Him.
They were blind......
Before I deal with the text this morning, I won’t to take a couple of moments to deal with 3 spiritual implications of being blind:

Spiritual Implications of being blind 1:

Blindness is also represented in scripture as a lack of spiritual perception or insight.

Isaiah 6:9–10 AV
And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
When you lack faith it causes you to be spiritually blind!
When you are without Christ, when you do not have a relationship with Christ you are blind. Why? Because you are walking in darkness, you are lost and you are in a hopeless situation. But the good news of the gospel is that Jesus came to literally and spiritually open the eyes of the blind.
God can bring you out of darkness, God can bring you out of sin.....but you gotta believe that He’s able to do it! They heard about Jesus believed the word of God and then their faith put them to action!

Spiritual implications of being blind 2:

Hopelessness can cause you to be blind:

2 Kings 6:17 AV
And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
2 Kings 6:20 AV
And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.
Because when you are without hope, when you are without expectation, when you can’t see anything good coming your way, you are walking in darkness. This servant couldn’t see anything good coming out of the enemy surrounding Samaria, but Elisha prayed that The LORD would open his eyes so that he could see. When The LORD opened his eyes, he saw chariots of fire all around the enemy, he saw God was in the midst of them, he saw that God was getting ready to fight this seemingly losing battle. Here it is, this man, this servant could actually see but was blind.....yet in our text we see two blind men that can actually see.

Spiritual implications of being blind # 3:

Grief can cause us to be blind:

Genesis 21:19 AV
And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
We see here that Hagar, after she has been evicted by Sarai and Abram is in a deserted place. She ran out of water and food and now she takes her son Ishmael and puts him under a bush to shield him from the sun and heat. She is probably feeling rejected and abandoned, she is not only worrying about her well being but also the well-being of her son Ismael. She was experiencing grief, she was experiencing difficulty but however the Bible tells us (verse 19) “God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water, and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
Sometimes your grief or your difficulty can blind you from seeing the providence of God because your grief can overwhelm you, your difficulty can overwhelm you!
Psalm 6:7 AV
Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies.
If you are here this morning and you’ve been experiencing grief, if you are listening and you are going through great difficulty.....you need to pray to God that God will open up your eyes! Don’t allow my grief to overtake me, don’t allow this this difficulty to consume me, open my eyes so that I can see your glory, open my eyes so that I can see and understand that you are with me.
GOD CAN DO IT! HE CAN OPEN YOUR EYES!
Psalm 146:8 AV
The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous:

Dealing with the Text (Returning to Matthew 9:27-31

Matthew 9:27 AV
And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.

These two men were following Jesus.....why?

These two blind men obviously heard about the miracles that Jesus was performing. If we were to ready verses 18-26 we would find that Jesus healed a woman who had been hemorrhaging for 12 long years by her just reaching out and touching the fringes of has garment.
Jesus also raises resurrects back to life the daughter of one of the leaders of a synagogue. The scriptures says He simply walks in the room, puts out all of the unbelievers and scoffers, grabs her lifeless hands and life comes back into her body.....just literally grabs her hand and leads her out of death.
After these two miracles the bible says in verse 26 that “this news spread throughout all that land”.
Somebody needs to hear that Jesus is a healer
Somebody needs to hear that Jesus is a deliver
Somebody today needs to hear that the Lord is still healing, still delivering, still making a way out of noway, still protecting, still fighting battles, still strengthening, still keeping.
After they heard the news about Jesus and they remembered what the scriptures said, they came to the conclusion that this has to be the Messiah.
Isaiah 35:5 AV
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
Isaiah 61:1 AV
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
I believe that they thought in their mind “this has to be the one that can help us, this has to be the one that is able to heal us.”
Sometimes things can get so bad in your life that no one on Earth can help you or bring you out.....but there is one that is Heaven that can.......The Lord Jesus Christ! Fortunately for these two blind men, Jesus was walking on the earth at this time.
They were blind, these two men who were in the same predicament, these two men who were struggling in life, these two men who were not able to work and take care of themselves because of a disability.
But there heard the good news…they heard that Jesus was a healer, evidently somebody had been testifying about what the LORD had done and it got back to these blind men and they knew what the scriptures said about the Messiah and they believed.
HOWEVER......
***It is not enough to just believe God you have to put some action behind your faith!*** What action? They started to put themselves in a position for the LORD to bless them. They started hollering out “Have mercy on us, Son of David”! Every once in awhile it is good to holla out......Jesus, have mercy on me, Jesus help me, Jesus strengthen me, one day Peter hollered out “Lord save me”.

Get the LORD’s attention!!!

(Verse 28)

“And when he (Jesus) was come into the house, the blind men came to him:”

It is apparent that Jesus did not acknowledge them at first. However they persisted on, they made up their mind that they were not going to stop until Jesus acknowledged them.
Sometimes, the Lord may not acknowledge you.....but just because your not acknowledged doesn’t mean He didn’t hear you.
These blind men were literally walking by faith....not by sight.
The Lord will delay sometimes because He uses the delay to build your faith.
Their faith was being tested. You have to remember that when your faith is tested you are going to come out of the situation better.....you’re coming out stronger! You might not understand it right now....but I assure you that one day your going to look back at your situation and say I’m stronger, I’m better, because the LORD strengthened my faith.
Notice here that even though Jesus doesn’t acknowledge them, they continue to pursue Jesus.
They won’t leave the LORD alone until they get what they came for (healing).
Just because your prayers go unanswered doesn’t mean that it is time for you to stop praying, stop fasting, stop calling on God, stop reading your Bible, stop coming to church. Just because the pain has gotten worse or the doctor gave you a bad prognosis doesn’t mean that you accept what they said. Just because your children’s attitude is worse now than before or the relationship seems to be going down the drain....doesn’t mean that you walk away and just accept what is going on.
You need to pursue! You need to bombard Heaven and make up in your mind “LORD I’m not going to stop calling you until I get what I came her for”.
So after Jesus sees that “hey these 2 guys just won’t leave me alone”.
The LORD asked them a question, “Do you believe that I am able to do this”
Sometimes it is not enough for you to think or know that God is able, sometimes you need to say that God is able to do it. So when Jesus asked them “Do you believe that I am able to do this” they replied “Yea Lord”.
I believe the LORD is asking of all of us concerning the difficult thing in our lives, concerning the situations that we find ourselves in, do you believe that I am able to do this.....do you believe that I am able to do what you’re asking me for, do you believe that I’m able to heal your body, do you believe that I’m able to make a way for you, do you believe that I’m able to deliver you, do you believe that I’m able to save your family member, do you believe that I’m able to fight for you, do you believe that I’m able to do it......I dare somebody lift up your hands and shout “YES LORD”!
Jesus touches their eyes.
Jesus says “according to your faith be it unto you”.
There was a slight delay.....
but their eyes were opened and God healed them.
There may be a slight delay......but if you keep your faith, if you keep seeking the LORD with all your heart. The LORD is going to bless you, the LORD is going to come through for you!
Closing:
Jesus because he was meek and humble and was not about making a reputation for himself told these two to keep it hush....don’t tell nobody. But they did the opposite.....they told everybody.....somebody needs to know that Jesus can do it.
Jesus can bring you out....the LORD can do it and the LORD is going to do it!
The Lord wants to bring you out. Again, remember that blindness in the scriptures not only signified an absence of sight physically, but that it can also represented an absence of sight spiritually. We are certainly living in dark times but do know that Jesus is the light in the midst of darkness.
