Why would Jesus Himself compare Himself to a snake?

Notes
Transcript
• Today’s topic is Jesus!
• We usually always think of Jesus as the spotless lamb, And He is...
• We think of Him as our King, Lord, and Savior, And He is...
• But, did you know that Jesus compared Himself to a snake?
• Why a snake?
John 3:14-15 says,
• Before I go any further...
• God has told me that this is for someone.
• I don’t know who, maybe someone in here, maybe someone out there hearing what’s coming over the speakers.
• In order to tell you what I’m about to tell you I am gonna have to tell you a little testimony about myself.
• (Story)
• So, with that said let us read...
Numbers 21:4-9
• Why do snakes like to lay in the road?
• Snake hunters will tell you that the best time to find snakes is not in the middle of the day while it is hot
• The best time is at night when it is cool, snakes are out laying in the road.
• The short explanation is to get heat.
• Snakes are cold blooded, which means they cannot regulate there own body Temperature.    Therefore they must “absorb” heat from other objects.
• If they are too hot they must lay on something cool so that the heat from their bodies can “be absorbed” by that object, making them cooler.
• In the bible snakes represent death, destruction, evil, sin, cunning, deceit, and the devil...    something just down right sneaky.
• So, if that is the way we see snakes, as portrayed in the bible, why would Jesus Himself compare Himself to a snake.
• Jesus, the spotless Lamb, Perfect, and without Blemish.
• So, let’s look further into the snake in the road.
• If we look at snakes from the bible perspective, then snakes lay in the road because they must be in the thick of things.
• There is two directions to every road.    (these are opposite directions)
• From the bible perspective, it means there is a wide road that heads in the direction of hell and the opposite direction is a narrow road leading to Heaven.
• The Serpent wants to lay in that road because it puts them in the thick of things.    They are right out in the middle of the action.
• There they can suck up all the muck that exists.
• See, if it doesn’t get in the middle of the action it starves itself.
• There is a lot of traffic on the roads leading to Heaven and hell.
• Some people is going to come upon that serpent and swerve - and then they have let the serpent throw a monkey wrench in there journey.
• But, Jesus...
• But, Jesus came and compared Himself to the serpent in that He took all that muck, all that sin, Just as that snake sucks the heat out of the road, onto Himself for us, because God knew we couldn’t handle it.
• Jesus was the only spotless Lamb that could take the sin of the whole world.
• Jesus was like the serpent in that He “absorbed” all that sin and muck.
• But He was different in that He went to hell and got the key and defeated satan and stumped the head of the serpent and was rose from the grave to live for Eternity.
• So, those who are certain of their journey and keep their eyes on God aren’t going to be swayed so much by that serpent laying in the middle of the road in traffic trying to trip us up.
• They know they don’t have to swerve, they can just ride right over it, because Jesus has already crushed its head.
See, it takes an expert to handle a snake.
• It has already been defeated.    It’s a fake, it is just trying to trick us into thinking that it has power.
• But us Christians can have assurance that it’s nothing more than a dead snake in the road.
• If you know Jesus, keep your eyes steadfast on Him and He will guide us up that narrow road with the narrow gate.
• If you don’t know Jesus understand this, there was, is, and will ever be but one that was pure and spotless and strong enough to crush the serpents head.
• And He did it for everyone, all you have to do is reach out and take His hand.
• You can make a U-turn in that road on your journey, the road in Jesus’ direction is a little harder to travel but He will always be there to help you.
• He is the only one that can do that for you.
• You will not find it in nothing or no one else.
• So my question today is, are you gonna let that serpent trick you and throw a monkey wrench in your journey?
• Or, are you gonna drive on by, steadfast, and just roll on over the serpent of sin called satan knowing that Jesus has already crushed his head for you?
