Our Perspective
Lord, are you not from everlasting?
My God, my Holy One, you will never die.
You, Lord, have appointed them to execute judgment;
you, my Rock, have ordained them to punish.
Habakkuk lamented in the opening of this book for he saw the injustice, violence and oppression that was being done to his countrymen by his countrymen. Habakkuk cries out for justice and for the Lord to respond and correct His people. In response, the Lord informs Habakkuk that none of the actions of his countrymen have fallen on deaf ears but rather that the Lord has known and has been actively moving and working as He has raised up the nation of Babylon to judge His people.
Here, Habakkuk objects to the Lord’s plan. Habakkuk sees the destruction that his people will have to undergo as the Babylonians step into the place that the Lord has raised them up for and he trembles. He objects to the Lord’s plan. Habakkuk can not see how this is going to result in anything other than Israel’s destruction
Habakkuk is beginning to manipulate God.
Manipulation
Manipulation
Your eyes are too pure to look on evil;
you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.
Why then do you tolerate the treacherous?
Why are you silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
Habakkuk tries to manipulate God by twisting God’s desires to fulfill his own personal gain.
God’s Plan over Ours
God’s Plan over Ours
You have made people like the fish in the sea,
like the sea creatures that have no ruler.
The wicked foe pulls all of them up with hooks,
he catches them in his net,
he gathers them up in his dragnet;
and so he rejoices and is glad.
Therefore he sacrifices to his net
and burns incense to his dragnet,
for by his net he lives in luxury
and enjoys the choicest food.
Is he to keep on emptying his net,
destroying nations without mercy?
Habakkuk tries to show the short comings of his situation. Apart from God, Israel has no hope over the babylonians. How could God allow this?
When we who are the good see those who are the bad
