Introduction

[Homiletical Question] Introduction: In the ED, I ask myself, “what do they need in order to repent?” Some believe and perhaps are also baptized believers.
[Text] Luke 16:19-31; 30, “if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!”
[Prayer]
[Series] We’ve done “Baptism” and “Faith.”
Outline
Biblical Definition
Biblical means of Prompting Repentance

Body

Faith and baptism are not difficult in genuine believers
Repentance is the most difficult. Among anything else, a gift to cause repentance would be best.
Jesus is the same way: He got most upset because no repentance.
Paul is the same way: He got most upset because no repentance.
Definition:
[Def: 1] Most common definition: Godly sorrow for sin? No, read: 2 Corinthians 7:10.
2 Corinthians 7:10 The result of godly sorrow is repentance.
[Def: 2] Repentance is reformation life.
Matt 3:8, 11-13 “Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance.”
[Def: 3] Repentance stands in the middle. Sorrow -> x -> reformed life.
A change of will in regard to sin.
It would be great if God could give it.
[God’s gift] Acts 11:18 “God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.”
[Man’s responsibility] Matthew 3:2, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”
Both a gift and man’s responsibility. This is difficult but this is true.
How Man Are to be Brought to Repentance
How can we help people say, “Oh Lord, not my will, but thine be done?”
Terror of Judgement
Jesus incited repent by the terror of judgment: said, “woe to you chorazin...”
Jonah did the same thing: “40 days and ninavah will be overthrown!” Jonah 3:4
Paul did the same thing at Mars Hill: “for he appointed a day of judgment.”
[Application] Ask audience: “Do you ever think about the consequences of your sinful life?”
Did you close the book; run away; wh
Goodness of God
Romans 2:4-5, “Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?”
This is how repentance is a gift of God’s.
But can’t God do something more? No.
Luke 16:19-31; 30, “No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’”
Question: How long a man ought to repent before he is prepared for baptism and union with the church?
Sorrow for sins is normally assumed as repentance in this question
When you look at the conversions in Acts, they all were immediate, other than Paul, who was baptized as long as 3 days later.
The answer is, as long as he has to be sorry before turning from his sins.
