Response to the Messiah
Our final thought last week was how worship related to the price that was paid for us on the cross and how we should worship God because of the sacrifice that was made for us.
We also talked about how the gift of salvation was being used to make sinners into worshippers. We will continue with that thought tonight and the results of us being made worshippers when we accept the gift of salvation.
At the end of Isaiah’s prophecy in chapter 66, we’ll see what the end result of us becoming worshippers through the redemptive work of Christ.
“For as the new heavens and the new earth
that I make
shall remain before me, says the Lord,
so shall your offspring and your name remain.
From new moon to new moon,
and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the Lord.
In the new heaven and new earth, all creation will come and worship the Lord.

If we look at Christ’s ministry while he was here on earth, we will see a lot of the response towards him after he performed miracles and healed people was to worship. There were even occasions when people really saw who He was and worshipped him in response to that recognition. We will look at several of these instances in the book of Matthew.

And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
The leper who needed healed.
And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
The ruler whose daughter had died and knew that Jesus had the power to heal her.
While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
While the disciples were in the boat and storm came, Jesus calmed the waters. As a result,
And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Canaanite woman needed healing.
But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
And finally, the disciples when they were with Jesus before he ascended into heaven.
And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.
Not all of these instances represent pure acceptable worship, but it does show that people worshipped Christ.
John’s gospel shows Jesus reaction to people who came to the temple and didn’t have worshipping on their mind. They had turned the temple into a marketplace.
The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
As we come to our temple/church on Sunday mornings, we need to ask what our purpose is for being present.
What are your motives?

If you are simply coming to perform a task or feel like you are fulfilling your Sunday, Wednesday, or whenever the doors are open at the church duty, your motive is wrong. We’re looking at this a little later in this lesson.
Chapter 3 of John, we see the first true worshipper in this book in Nicodemus.
Chapter 4 we see Jesus tell the woman at the well He is looking for true worshipper.

We can follow the theme of worship all throughout the New Testament where it will all come to a culmination in Revelation where John, in his visions, saw great acts of worship all around him.
And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
You can continue on in this chapter and continue to see numerous acts of worship.
Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
The eternal gospel that is brought here is to fear or have reverence God and to give Him your worship.

We could go on and read many, many verses in Revelation that will continue to show what we will be doing in eternity as well as the worship that will be given to our Father throughout the events of this book.

for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!”
Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Worship is the theme of scripture, the theme of eternity, the theme of redemptive history.

Worshiping God has been the theme in creation and will be even at the end of recorded history. It is the priority for which all was made.
