Mission News – From Teresa Vanderford in Bangladesh, May 2017
One afternoon I was sitting across the desk from our Bangladeshi asst. hospital
administrator. So I ask, what are things that help foreigners like me build relationships of
trust and serve here successfully for many years? There is wisdom in his answer.
“Nobody cares how well you do your work if you do not talk to them.” It is important
that people know you care. He describes the importance of relationships. One of the
important things he does is take time to sit and drink tea with people. Sometimes it means
taking tea and snacks to somebody and listening to them. This makes me think of
something someone else said: “…If I have prophetic power, and understand all mysteries
and all knowledge… but have not love, I am nothing” (1 Cor 13:2).
This month I have spent a lot of time drinking tea with people. I was ‘drinking tea’ with
my friend in the small, dimly-lit living room of her mud home. She was fanning me with
a hand fan to help make the heat bearable. She talks about her in-laws who helped her
understand God’s goodness. “I had no idea that God would give me such a wonderful
family.” Her face begins to glow with a beautiful smile as she continues. “I didn’t know
he would give me such a nice house.” She lives in a small mud house with limited
electricity and no fans. “I didn’t know he would give me such a good job.” She is a
sweeper. She looks at me and says “God is good. He has given me so many blessings.” I
left her house encouraged and inspired by her faith in God, her love for him, and her
gratitude to him. How many of us fail to recognize God’s blessings to us and neglect to
tell of His goodness?
Pray for Teresa that she will regain her strength after being hospitalized with a parasitic
illness.

Recommended Reading:
Heaven, by Randy Alcorn [first recommended in 2010]
This is the most life-changing book I have read in years! Want to know where you are
going as a Christian? Read this book. Want to encourage an eternal perspective in your
life. Read this book. Got questions about heaven? This book has answers.
Alcorn speculates in some areas and give his imagination credible rein. But this book is
soundly biblical. You will find yourself checking out cross references constantly. You
will also find yourself amazed at what you have read before and overlooked. Where is
heaven located? Won’t heaven be a little boring? Will heaven be familiar? Will we
know each other in heaven? Where will we live in heaven? Will there be music and art
and culture in heaven? Will we eat and drink in heaven? What will our bodies be like in
heaven? Are there animals in heaven? What does restoration really mean? These are
just a few of the questions that the book addresses. Some of the answers will surprise
you. Check it out.
