knowledge - similar to wisdom
arrogant - puffed up - tends to give us pride and self-reliance
Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other.
love builds up - what is best for the souls of my brothers and sisters, not about what you want. I know this and so i am going to do it. the other attitude is out of love I can do it but wont so i don’t cause someone else to stumble or go back to idolatry.
but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,
leaders cannot just think about ourselves we have to think about everyone else, and whats best for their souls.
v. 2 a real lack of humility, they really don’t know as well as they think they do. He has only gathered a few pebbles on the shore of the ocean of truth and doesn’t know how to use what he has.
v. 3 if you love God you will love your neighbor
v. 4 God - Heb. elohim - little “g”od is also the same word. sometimes powerful men are called elohim - means great or mighty, angels are also called elohim. other great created beings.
No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
they aren’t just worshipping air but demons, they are not the CREATOR.
there is only one creator
All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
He is the creator.
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
rulers and principalities
some of those created beings are worshiped by those on earth
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
I am the creature and God is the creator.
demons are involved in paganism. real powerful beings behind that statue.
v. 5
bea’al - baal - husband or Lord, many gods baal-peor, baal - Lord this or Lord that
v. 6
“Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”
why should he be worshiped because he created everything.
and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,
we say the other gods don’t exist. you shall worship the lord your God and him only you should serve
“You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
“You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
you should not worship or serve them.
v. 7 many look at the beings who can influence all of earthly life we should look at them all as equal - man is at them mercy of all them and we ought satisfy all of them. God is over all.
they were raised in idol worship and Isis, Apollo, Diana, Aphrodite and this was a way of gaining aprroval and closeness with these Gods and now they have been taught ther is one creator and you shouldn’t wortship them. should we go should we not go.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Seven: Be Wise about … Christian Liberty (1 Corinthians 8)
The word conscience simply means “to know with,” and it is used thirty-two times in the New Testament. Conscience is that internal court where our actions are judged and are either approved or condemned (Rom. 2:14–15). Conscience is not the law; it bears witness to God’s moral law. But the important thing is this: conscience depends on knowledge. The more spiritual knowledge we know and act on, the stronger the conscience will become.
their conscience is defiled v. 7 wounded v. 12 offended v. 13
v. 8 food isn’t going to get you closer to God - its just meat
v. 9 liberty = or right Gk. exousia
Do we not have a right to eat and drink?
Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas?
Or do only Barnabas and I not have a right to refrain from working?
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.
Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
Deut. 13
Ex. 7
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
1st 3 plagues the magicians were able to reproduce (serpent, blood, frogs)
necromancy - condemned it happened in 1 Sam. 28
divination - ability to foretell the future by demonic powers Acts 16:16-18
Rev. 12 - is he neutered, I don’t think so
v. 11ff it may not be a sin but if it causes someone to stumble you are sinning against Christ, we need to be willing to give up our liberty out of love
the person that loves does not act on what they want or their liberty they act based on whats better for others.
