LCMS Lectionary Summary:
OT: 1Sa 16.1-13 vs Isa 42.14-21 which rcl does not read, so really, it should be considered every other year; it brings up light “I will turn the darkness before them into light” 16c. RCL’s 1Sa 16 begins by reiterating how Y rejected Saul and will find someone new, Jesse’s last son out tending sheep, God looks at the outward appearance. Also important to the story to cement David’s place in God’s plan of redemption.

By His Word of the Gospel, Jesus Calls Us Out of the Darkness into His Marvelous Light
The Lord is grieved by the spiritual blindness of His people, yet in mercy He does not forsake them. He restrains His anger and keeps His peace, until He opens their ears and eyes to hear and see Him. “For his righteousness’ sake,” He magnifies His Word and makes it glorious in the coming of Christ Jesus (Is. 42:21). Jesus turns “the darkness before them into light” (Is. 42:16) because He is “the light of the world” (John 9:5). The incarnate Son of God does the works of His Father and displays the divine glory in His own flesh “while it is day,” until that night “when no one can work” (John 9:4). By the washing of water with His Word, He opens the eyes of the blind and grants rest to the weary. Therefore, though “at one time you were darkness,” now “you are light in the Lord” (Eph. 5:8). By our Baptism into Christ, we live in the eternal day of His resurrection, wherein He shines upon us. As often as we fall back into the darkness of sin, He calls us by the Gospel to “awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead” (Eph. 5:14).

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me him whom I name to you.” Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice. The fact that David was the eighth might have the meaning 7+1 which symbolizes the newly restored heavens and earth.
2017 I thought Samuel had pretty much rejected Saul and given him the cold shoulder (rightly) but he did go with him and appear with Saul publicly. So here the LORD is telling Samuel not to mourn any longer. God himself has his limits of regret it seems. The first person who Samuel saw that he thought must be the next king was Eliab.

2020 NIVAC warns that the familiarity of this psalm/passage to us is a challenge, for one to say anything new (not truly new but old rediscovered, so no innovations here) and secondly, to distance oneself from traditional and denominational viewpoints that can at times bracket the text or box the text in (I took a lot of liberty in giving what I take to be the sense of NIVAC)
2017 Read in Chn today, good practice but so far no new revelations. Maybe to ask why is the staff and rod comforting, they are offensive and defensive weapons (the rod) the staff is the jerking back to the true way object. So the Christian life adn the Christian walk are by peaceful waters and green meadows, but that's not all they are, there is herk and there is jerk, there are slaps and blows to ward off our enemies.

for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest in him. We must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day; night comes, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” As he said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and anointed the man’s eyes with the clay, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar, said, “Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?” Some said, “It is he”; others said, “No, but he is like him.” He said, “I am the man.” They said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash’; so I went and washed and received my sight.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. Therefore his parents said, “He is of age, ask him.” So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, “Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner.” He answered, “Whether he is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see.” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you too want to become his disciples?” And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The man answered, “Why, this is a marvel! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if any one is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. Never since the world began has it been heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of man?”He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who speaks to you.” He said, “Lord, I believe”; and he worshiped him. 2017 (the abbreviated reading, and that is itself the alternate not primary reading in the LM, is 1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38. Sure there are lots of arguments as to why not to shorten, but at least when one does, the emPHAsis is on the right sylLAble. The man is healed, says he is a prophet, is rejected by the Pharisees because he is willing to follow this man (Jesus) who obviously is not good because he "worked" on the Sabbath. But the man doesn't care (even that his parents won't stand up for him) but in the end not only regards Jesus as a prophet but says "I believe" and worships him.
