“True Repentance and the Impact of Worship”

Exodus 33:5-17.
Notice:

1. The Message from God

Verse 1-3a - I’m going to send you to the Land
verse 3b - But I’m not going with you… my presence won’t go with you.
His message included:

a. His Promise

You’re going to the Land

b. His Presence

But I’m not going with you.
If you got your way, but God wasn’t there… would it be worth it to you?
How did they get there?

2. The Sin of the People

10 plagues
Delivered from the passover
walked through the red sea
Move of God.
Pillar of Cloud by day
Pillar of Fire by night
Moses on the mountain
People chose to worship a golden calf.
This sounds silly… “i would never do this.”
What would get us to this point?

a. By their inactivity (32:1)

b. By their Focus

Focusing on the Blessings of God and not God Himself

c. By their Choices (32:4)

No golden calf split an ocean, just like no amount of fame can save a soul.
This country, and this world sure has.
The choices we make have a lot to do with our misunderstanding of God’s gifts and grace toward us.
This world has twisted God’s standard on life, love, and liberty.
Christians have become ignorant of the Word of God that we say is enough for us.
Choosing Death over Life
Abortion.
60,000,000 legal abortions in our country alone.
only 9 countries in the world have a higher rate than the USA. 9.
15 million just because they aren’t ready for a kid.
This has more to do with our understanding of God’s gift of life than it does with the inconviences that life brings.
Psalm 127:3-5 - children are a reward and strength
Exodus 20:13 - do not murder
“well.. it’s not life until after they are born. WRONG!”
Amos 1:13-14 said that God would destroy the nation of Ammon becuase they “ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead.”
This country has chosen the destruction, and murder of innocent babies and wrapped it up in what they want to consider a cute bow just to say it’s “legal.”
Job 31:15 - God made me in the womb
Psalm 139:13-15 - i’m fearfully and wonderfully made
Ecclesiastes 11:5 - I cannot understand how a tiny baby receives breath in its mother’s womb, but God can.
Choosing Lust over Love
Marriage between 1 man and 1 woman.
Choosing Porn over Purity
2015 - 4,000,000,000 hours of pornography was watched. on just one site.
Choosing Social Media over Son of Man
2 hours and 3 minutes a day
average person picks up their phone 150 times per day
Choosing Opinions over Obedience
Choosing
lust over marriage
instant gratification over godliness
Man’s approval over Obedience
Social media over the Son of Man

3. The Repentance of the People

Repentance is a change of mind.
Repentance is a change of action.
Repentance includes Godly sorrow.
33:6 - they took off their earrings and ornaments.
33:7 - some of them turned back to God and went to where He was in the tabernacle outside of the camp.
They turned their hearts back to God… when they were reminded of who God is and what God has done.
Look at verse 9 - God showed back up! That is His presence, That is the One that split the sea! That is the One that did the work.
“God I’m sorry I chose these idols. I’m sorry I chose sin, and other things over You.”

4. Worshipping the true Savior

we have all “missed it”
We have all turned to other things and gone astray in our walks with Jesus.
After hearing that God wouldn’t go with them.. And that this was “Evil tidings.” There were people that rose up and said “He’s right. I’m going to go and worship God!”

5. The value of God’s Presence

Peace. Israel needed peace. Much turmoil was present in the camp when Moses sought God’s presence. But God can bring tranquility. When Christ came to the disciples when they were in the grip of a bad storm at sea, His presence brought peace (John 6:21). When I was with my father, I would go any place without dread or fear for his presence gave me great peace of mind. So it is with God’s presence.
Protection. Israel needed God’s presence to protect them in the wilderness. Without God you are unprotected from attacks of evil. God is the great protectorate. Especially can he protect the soul from eternal damnation.
Purity. Sin abounded in Israel’s camp, for they had forsaken God and turned to an idol. God’s presence promotes purity. It is like the presence of a minister causing men to clean up their language and stop their dirty stories. The efforts to get God out of our society today is because society is wicked. Sinners do not want God with them anymore than criminals want a policeman with them. God’s presence makes it hard to sin. Without God homosexuals, abortion etc. thrive.
Perception. Israel needed to be guided though the trackless wilderness. God’s presence would assure Israel of this needed compass. Much of the world is floundering, today not knowing where they are going. This is because they have left out God in their life.
