The temple is a symbol of God’s holiness
Hebrew מִקְדָשׁ, from קָדַשׁ (to be holy), or קָדוֹשׁ (holy)
Holiness = set apart, consecrated, different, unique
This builds upon the idea of God’s glory from last week
God is completely other than anything in creation
God is everything that humans are not in our wickedness, idolatry, sinfulness, depravity and corruption
Therefore, The temple is a symbol of God’s grace
God’s holiness makes it impossible for humans to dwell with himTheological significance of the templeThe presence of GodGod’s holiness and his goodnessGod’s holiness is both good and dangerousExodus 40:34-38The people of Israel must be holy as God is holy Leviticus 10:13, Leviticus 11:44, Leviticus 11:45, Leviticus 19:2, Leviticus 20:7, Leviticus 20:26Leviticus 1:1 - God spoke to Moses from the tent of meetingNumbers 1:1 - God spoke to Moses in the tent of meetingGod’s separation and his desire to be present Jesus tore the curtain of the temple Matthew 27:51 - God’s presence is now not in the temple behind the curtain
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 ESV16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 ESV19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
2 Corinthians 6:14–18 ESV14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, 18 and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”
