Submission

1 Peter 2:13–17 NKJV
13 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— 16 as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. 17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
Into:
Look back at VS 11-12
1. Peter telling them and us that believers should live a Godly life in front of the unsaved.
a. Now he turns to living a life of submission. This is not something ez to do.

I. The call to submission. VS 13

1 Peter 2:13 NKJV
13 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme,
“submit yourselves to every”
1. The word for “submit” is hypotassō, a Greek military term having to do with the ordinary rank and file of an organized group of soldiers. Soldiers might not like the orders they are given—they may not even agree with them—but obedience to authority is the very essence of the military. Orders must be obeyed.
a. It a continual submission. Submitting to someone doesn’t smarter then you, or greater then you (your boss). It means that they have authority over you.

II. Who do we submit too? VS 13-14

1 Peter 2:13–14 NKJV
13 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good.
“Every ordinance of man”
Governmental authority. (this is what God’s word says)
a. We may not like them, we may not agree with them. But Gods words tells us we are to submit to them.
“whether to the King as supreme”
b. Peters day. Nero Caesar. (Elab on what he did to Christians)
c. As Christians we can disagree, we can take a stand, but we have to do so lawfully.
d. Somethings may be lawful but not right.
e. Taxes may be spent on things we disagree with.
Romans 13:1–2 NKJV
1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.
We are to submit to the powers that be. Jesus never commanded us to civil disobedience.
a. Jesus never practiced or never told us be civil disobedient.
b. When Jesus was arrested after doing nothing wrong (elab what Peter did) Jesus told Peter to put away your sword.
2. What is breaking God’s law means breaking mans law? This is very fine line, but then you break mans law.
a. Government say who can not pray. You pray.
b. Government says no longer preach the gospel. Preach the gospel.
Some example in the Bible.
a. Daniel told to not pray.
b. Shad, Mesack, Abendgo.
c. Peter and John.
Acts 4:19 NKJV
19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.
a. They kept preaching the gospel pf Jesus.
1 Peter 2:14 NKJV
14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good.
We should obey laws to avoid punishment, and bring praise. People (lost) will see when yo do good.
a. Government laws punish evil. (Elab law enforcement are the one who enforce the laws. Elab on the attack on them today)

III. We obey laws because it is Gods will.

1 Peter 2:15 NKJV
15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men—
God whats us to obey laws. Not just the law of the land, but his laws (every word spoken) too. It is His will.
“that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men”
a. The expression “put to silence” comes from phimoō, a word that means “to muzzle.
b. The word for “ignorance” is agnosia. The only other place where it occurs is in 1 Corinthians 15:34, where it means “culpable, self-caused ignorance.” The word for “foolish” is aphron. It is a strong word that means “senseless ones.” The Lord used the word in describing the hypocrisy of the Pharisees (Luke 11:40).
c. If we do what is right, if we live our life like a follower of Jesus is suppose if live, we will put a muzzle on the ones (lost, ungodly) that are trying to find fault with us.
1 Peter 2:16 NKJV
16 as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.
Peter is telling them, you are free but you don’t use your freedom for selfish reasons. You is it for sacrificial service.
a. We are free, but we are servants of God.
b. Pray, proclaim the gospel, we live a holy life. Jesus set the example.
2. I HATE abortion. But I’m not going to blow up an abortion clinic. I’m not going to protest and call them baby killers. I will pray, I will vote, I will love them and live a Godly life in front of them.
a. If we will pray, proclaim the gospel, live a Godly life. Then we can chance the world. To change the world we have to chance hearts.
1 Timothy 2:1–4 NKJV
1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

IV. The reason for our submission

1 Peter 2:17 NKJV
17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
This verse breaks it down.
1. The way this is written, it means we continue to do so.
“Honor” Show respect, give recognition.
1. It makes no difference where we are. Whose we are in what matters. (WE belong to God)
a. We are to give honor to all men regardless of color, class, or creed. Regardless of their political views.
b. The people no one else will have anything to do with. The outcast, the forgotten. The poor, mean people.
c. When we do this we will have a better chance to have a gospel conversation, and lead then to faith in Jesus.
d. A great way to so “honor” respect to someone, a kind word, a gentile voice.
“Love the brotherhood”
We have special love for fellow Christians.
a. Peter tells this throughout this letter.
“Fear God”
Proverbs 9:10 NKJV
10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
1. Fear God is a reverence that we have for God.
a.
“Honor the king”
VS 13 Submit yourself. (Speaking of the king) Honor the King.
Those in government. Obey, honor. But we also must pray for them.
End:
James 4:7 NKJV
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
As Christians we that the devil is always on the attack. We have to submit to God, that means doing what He says.
In order be a Christian you have to give your life to Him. (The plan of salvation)
