Sermon Text
4:11 Thus we must make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.
God’s rest is a state of being (2)
People are watching you. (2)
4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart. 4:13 And no creature is hidden from God,14 but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.
NET Bible (Heb 4:11–13)
What is that rest? God’s rest is a state, or place, where God rules and manages his creation, free from the chaos and disorder brought about by sin and rebellion. All who will rest from their own work of bringing their own life under control can enter into God’s rest. https://www.christianity.com/wiki/christian-life/how-can-we-enter-god-s-rest.html
(2) What are we doing wrong? We have a pattern of disobedience: We are predisposed to sin. However we cannot be fatalistic about our predisposal. See the example of David.
Psalm 51:3–5
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me.
4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
David demonstrated godly sorrow.
