Hedge Protection, Community,

Isa 5:1-4

Even today in Palestine a culture of community something that might seem odd to us. Whenever a person buys or inherits property the whole community, men, women, children and all, comes out into the middle of the field and they start to pick up stones in the field. They then through the stones as far out as they can until they reach the border of the property. They then gather all the stones up and create a wall and pour dirt into the cracks of the stones and take a weed and put it on top. This week is a natural barbed wire fence and once uprooted it will again grow new roots into the dirt. This week acts as a hedge of protection so when a sheep or a goat goes up to the field or vineyard the weed hurts their legs and grows high enough where they cannot jump over it. This is what is meant by the hedge of protection the Lord promises his people in Isa 5:1-4
