Walter Bouman was a beloved retired professor at one of the seminaries.
He learned that he had an aggressive form of colon cancer. He chose not to go through treatment, rather he would let nature take it’s course.
The Oncologist, a cancer Doctor told him he had six to nine months to live. His question, kind of serious, kind of funny, “When do I start counting?” April 1st? Or May 1st? He said, 180 days minus one.
He was counting.
He was counting not out of despair. He was counting in a manner that made him see each day as a gift. He listened to classical music in a different way. He lived celebrating the resurrection from the dead.
I am sure he grieved. He even speaks of how he wished he would no longer wake up on this earth.
He grieved in a way that looked forward to tomorrow, if not here on this earth then in heaven with our Lord.
