Lie Number 1 God is whatever you want Him to Be
Text: Romans 1:21–32 (KJV 1900)
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man,
and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Introduction: * Men don’t want to admit it, but we are born to seek meaning in life.
* I remember my thoughts very well when I was only 6 years old.
* As a 6 year old boy I had already begun to ask myself questions like “Why are we here?” “Why are we alive?” “What is the reason that I was born?
* You see, God her as built into the heart of every man to seek his creator. Whether you admit it or not, there is a restlessness within you that seeks to be satisfied.
* We begin life trying to satisfy deep void in our souls. God has put it in the heart of man to seek his Creator and to know Him.
* Some call this void in our c a “God sized hole that only God can fill.
* This desire to satisfy a thirsty soul drives us on in a search for something to fill the hole in our soul.
* As a little boy I found what was need in my soul when, for the first time, I understood who my creator was.
* As my father took the Bible and explained to me why we went to church, and the reason I was here on this earth, the Holy of God, the creator of my body and soul, came to me and offered to fill the “God sized hole in my heart.
* I gladly accepted the Holy Spirit’s offer, and placed my faith and trust in my creator. I agreed in that moment to accept Him without question or argument.
* Ever since that day my soul has been satisfied! God came in and filled my restless seeking soul with peace. I knew it, I could feel it in my heart! And it is still there!
* The book of Psalms gives us a description of the raging thirst that is within us to search for our Creator:
Psalm 42:1–4 (AV)
1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? 4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.
* The greatest sin of our modern society today is that we have “trivialized” God.
* We have tried to shrink God down and put Him in a box that we can handle.
* We prefer the illusion of a safer kind of God that we can shrink down to a size that we can handle.
I. We have turned from God to Idols of our imaginations.
* The children of Israel were afraid of the real God.
* God had revealed Himself to Israel and they had no choice but to fear Him.
Hebrews 12:18–21 (KJV 1900)
18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, 19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more: 20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: 21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
Exodus 19:8–13 (KJV 1900)
8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord. 9 And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord.
10 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: 13 There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.
Exodus 19:16–25 (KJV 1900)
16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. 19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. 21 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the Lord to gaze, and many of them perish. 22 And let the priests also, which come near to the Lord, sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break forth upon them. 23 And Moses said unto the Lord, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. 24 And the Lord said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the Lord, lest he break forth upon them. 25 So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.
Exodus 20:3–19 (KJV 1900)
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain;
for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12 Honour thy father and thy mother:
that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. 13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet
thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. 19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
* God had revealed Himself to the whole nation of Israel!
* My friend, if you think God is going to mealy mouth around with you and your sin this morning, then you’ve got another thing coming! You just don’t know who God is! * But God was bigger than they wanted Him to be, so they decided to whittle him down a little bit:
Exodus 32:15–28 (KJV 1900)
15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. 16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. 17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. 18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear. 19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. 20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it. 21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them? 22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief. 23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. 24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf. 25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:) 26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord’s side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. 27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. 28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
II. Idolatry is more that dancing around a golden statue!
* I said earlier that the greatest sin of our modern society today is that we have “trivialized” God.
* In the previous example, the people of Israel tried to shrink God down and make Him something they could handle They were not afraid to party naked in front of their new god!
Exodus 32:17–19 (KJV 1900)
17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. 18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear. 19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
Exodus 32:25 (KJV 1900)
25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
* We prefer the illusion of a safer kind of God that will not speak against our sin!
* Because of this our modern society, like that of Israel, has manufactured their own God. A God of love and tolerance that respects every man. * The world is teaching your children at school that it doesn’t matter if you are GBLT! God respects you anyway! God is a God of tolerance!
* My friends, our generation has turned the Gospel of the guilt and repentance of sin for forgiveness of sin into a hideous lie that God is tolerant of sin! - The true God of the Bible has never been tolerant of men’s sins in the past - The true God of the Bible is not tolerant of you sin right now! - The True God of the Bible will never be tolerant of your sin in the future! * Doesn’t matter if you don’t like the angry, vengeful, violent God of the Bible!
* My friend the first lie of the 10 lies about God that I intend to reveal in
This series of messages is the lie that God is whatever you want Him to be like!
* Want you to understand that Idolatry this morning is more that dancing around a statue of Gold!
* Idolatry is giving respectability to our own opinions of God and shrinking him down to be someone like us.
