Romans 15:13 NIV
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
When Paul wrote to the church in Rome the Christians were dealing with many of the same problems we have today.
There was corruption in the government, society was immoral, and soon the persecution of Christians would become horrific.
Paul wrote this letter around 57 AD just 3 years after the Nero (who was 16 years old) became Caesar. Nero's wide spread persecution of the Christians began in 64 AD. just seven years after Paul wrote the Roman church.
Paul’s teaching in Romans 15:13 about the overflowing hope which Jesus gives was exactly what the Roman Christians needed to learn to prepare them for the persecution that was soon coming their way!
In Romans 15:13 Paul taught them that because of their faith in Jesus they would thrive with the joy and peace of Jesus and overflow with His hope!
So, if you have lost hope, or are presently loosing hope, or just in need for your hope to be renewed this message is for you!
Today we’re going to study Romans 15:13 which will teach us about The Source Of Hope, The Path To Overflowing Hope, and The Blessing That Hope Brings

The Source Of Hope

A. Hope Defined: (elpidos) hope, confident expectation

1. “Hope” in modern usage carries with it the essence of question and doubt.

2. This isn’t the case in the Bible; Biblical hope is full of expectation and even certainty!

3. The hope that we have in Christ is alive and active!

1 Peter 1:3 NIV
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4. Because our hope is alive in Christ we don’t have to see in order to believe.

Romans 8:24–25 NIV
For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

5. However, since hope has to do with the future it must be viewed in its relationship to patiently waiting, even enduring through times of hardship.

1 Thessalonians 1:3 NIV
We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

6. While it is faith that governs how we view and function in the present; hope is what governs our view of the future.

In the Expositors Bible Commentary Everett Harrison refers to hope as, “the forward-looking aspect of faith.”

7. The world often views a Christian’s hope as having no basis; however, there is no shame in putting your hope in Jesus!

Romans 5:5 NIV
And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

B. Jesus Is The Source Of True Hope

1. In his letter to Timothy the Apostle Paul referred to Jesus as our hope.

1 Timothy 1:1 NIV
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,

2. Paul’s reference to the “God of Hope” in Romans 15:13 is referring to Jesus as seen in Romans 15:12.

Romans 15:12–13 NIV
And again, Isaiah says, “The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; in him the Gentiles will hope.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

3. The fact that Jesus is our source of hope is found throughout the Bible; even in types and spiritual object lessons.

The symbolism of the cord that Rahab was told to put in her window is striking!

(Joshua 2:18, NASB95) unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and gather to yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father’s household.

Cord = 8615 תִּקְוָה, תִּקְוָה [tiqvah /tik·vaw/] AV translates as “hope” 23 times, “expectation” seven times, “line” twice, “the thing that I long for” once, and “expected” once. 1 cord. 2 hope, expectation.

C. Our Hope Must Be In God Alone; Not In Man Or Circumstances!

1. There is no basis of hope outside of God Himself; this reveals that our hope must be in Him, not man or our circumstances!

2. We have hope because when we think of what the future holds, even in its darkest hour, we know that Jesus will be there … triumphant!

Revelation 17:14 NIV
They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.”

The Path To Overflowing Hope

A. The Path To Overflowing Hope Is One Full Of Action!

There are three action verbs in Romans 15:13 (Fill … Trust … Overflow)

Romans 15:13 NIV
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

1. Fill = fulfill, complete, fill (Aorist Tense)

4137 πληρόω (play·ro·o) to make full, to fill up, i.e. to fill to the full, to cause to abound, to furnish or supply liberally.

This is an action that only God can do.

2. Trust = trust, believe, be faithful (Present Tense)

4199 πιστεύω (pisteuō) to trust; to believe; to be faithful. This is the most frequent verb in the NT concerning faith or trust. This verbal form expresses the idea of trust in or faithfulness to someone or something.

You can’t produce true hope and Jesus doesn’t expect you to; the only thing Jesus expects you to do is put your trust (i.e. faith) in Him and He’ll take care of the rest!

“Clearly, the Christian life is God’s empowering presence in the midst of life’s uncertainties. It is not up to us to conjure up hope or any other spiritual quality. Our only access to empowerment is to believe. Then God steps in and does the rest. The Christian life is a supernatural life in the fullest sense of that term: “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).”

3. Overflow = to abound; to be in abundance (Present Tense)

4052 περισσεύω (perisseuo) to be in abundance, with the implication of being considerably more than what would be expected—‘to abound, to be in abundance, to be a lot of, to exist in a large quantity, to be left over.

The Blessing That Hope Brings

A. Overflowing With Hope Is Equivalent To Overflowing With Jesus!

1. Those who are full of Jesus have a positive attitude towards the future.

2. That doesn’t mean that they think it is going to be easy, it means that they know that they will be victorious … all because of Jesus!

B. As You “Overflow With Hope” You Will You Be Blessed And You Will Be A Blessing To Many Others

1. Your overflowing hope is evidence that you are blessed with the peace and joy of Jesus!

2. Your overflowing hope in Jesus will keep you steadfast and sure through the darkest of times!

3. Your overflowing hope will also be a testimony to others of the keeping power and faithfulness of Jesus the source of all hope!

4. Always be ready to share the reason for your abounding hope!

1 Peter 3:15 NIV
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
