Introduction

One of the things I have wanted to do. (Visit the Holy Land)
Why do I want to visit (Rich History and see context of Bible visually.)
The Sea of Galilee or the Mount of Olives
My wifes benefits in flying
Why I am not taking advantage of it
We would be strangers
We dont speak Hebrew
Dont know where anything is
Translating and geography would hold us back
What is the solution?
Sign up for tour
With tour we would have guide
See more sites
Explain the context better
Guide is essential to the experience

Transition

What we are discussing. (Holy Spirit as it relates to Apostles Creed)
Holy Spirit like tour guide
Navigating things of God without Spirit like navigating without tour guide
No Spirt = stranger in foreign land
Spirit a lot like guide but so much more

Isaiah 11:2

We will be looking at Isaiah 11:2
This verse will tell us
Who is the Holy Spirit
What is his work
Isaiah 11:2 reads.
“And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.”

Who is the Holy Spirit?

This text is about Christ
First line tells us who Spirit is
“And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.”
3 People mentioned in this verse
Spirit
The Lord
Him
Him= person of Christ
The Spirit who will rest on him
The Lord, whose Spirit it is that shall rest on him
Dealing with trinity, one God three persons
Holy Spirit is third member of Godhead
Holy Spirit is God
Trinity complex topic we will not have time
Holy Spirit has unique job
Since Holy Spirit is God and has unique job, it is important that he would be discussed in the Apostles Creed.

The Work of The Holy Spirit

Regeneration

I mentioned really wanting to visit Holy Land in beg
There was a time when I had no desire
If I could have went for free, I probably wouldnt have
It would appear that something changed
What was it?
The Holy Spirit worked in my life, Regeneration
Before we are born again, no desire for God
Seeking God would require leaving our sin behind, we see no reason to do it.
We do what is natural to us. Born sinners so sin is natural.
Ephesians 2 tells us we were dead in our sins until God made us alive together with Christ
When we are born from mothers womb, alive physically dead spiritually
Even as a babe, disconnected from God and in love with sin. Everybody
The Spiritually dead person brought to Spiritual life is work of Holy Spirit.
The Same Spirit that brought Christ to life in resurrection.
When Gods Spirit rests on us, we are made a new person, regenerated, or born again. All are the same.

Wisdom and Understanding

Not only Spiritual Life but Wisdom and Understanding
I once had no interest in God, now that I do, I want to know the things of God.
John 15:26 says, “26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.”
Spirit is our tour guide
This is a foreign place to us.
We come from the world of sin
A person who never used math before doesnt just wake up a scholar but must be taught by a scholar.
Who knows God better than God
God most knowledgeable about all, especially things concerning himself
1 Corinthians 2 describles Spirits work of understanding as having the mind of Christ
This is why we pray before we read Bibles
On our own, its like going to Holy Land without tourg guide.
Or even trying to learn calculus when we cant figure out 2+2

Counsel and Might

Once born again we are new creation
New Creation=new desire to know things of God
Our text says “The Spirit of counsel and might”
What does this mean?
Holy Land tour guide may see us standing by cliff
Tour guide may see us standing by a pool of water
Spirit of counsel and might acts as tour guide. whats right and whats wrong
Called Spiritual Discernment
When we do wrong, we grieve Holy Spirit
Like Good counselor, it will let us know
Not only does he know when we are wrong, but gives us power to do right
All sinful desires dont disappear when born again
We have temptations to battle
Sin is oppsosite of what Spirit wants (war)
Flesh wants to keep sinning, Spirit wants us to do good
Holy Spirit is stronger than flesh which gives us power in battle over it
When I was first born again, many sinful desires disappeared
Some remained
Continued to watch bad tv shows and movies
Realized they were grieving the Spirit
May be suitable for others
Used to listen to bad music before I was saved, even used to make it
Was convicted through the Spirit it wasnt for me to listen to this kind of music being a child of God
The Spirit of counsel and might lets you know how to live a godly life and gives you the power to live it.

The Spirit of Knowledge and the Fear of the Lord

Proverbs 1:7
says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”
Holy Spirit causes us to
Be born again
teaches us Scripture
how to live
gives us power to live that way
also gives us knowledge through the fear of the Lord
What is the fear of the Lord?
The Lexham Bible Dictionary describes this as “A religious expression conveying either devotional piety or the dread of punishment.”
c. Fearing the Lord means to respect him and submit to his commands(devotional piety)
d. (dread of punishment) leads us to believe that when the Lord says “Repent or Perish” he actually means it
e. Both made possible through Holy Spirit
f. On top of all other things, Spirit reveals to us God is worthy of all praise, honor, and glory.
g. What makes fear of the Lord beginning of wisdom?
h. The fear of the Lord is the most important thing you could know.
The wisest
most useful
most beneficial
most necessary
The beginning of knowledge

Closing

Holy Spirit important to Christian Life
Brings spiritually dead people to life
Teaches us things of God
Teaches us whats right and wrong
Gives us power to obey Gods commands
Places fear of God in our hearts that we might respect him and follow his commands

Application

Stop being wise in our own eyes but allow God to teach us
We all lack complete wisdom need a lot of learning
James 1:5
says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
If you are having trouble understanding things I challenge you to pray for wisdom
Keep praying til you get it
We now realize Spirit is of counsel and might
What in your life is grieving Holy Spirit?
I challenge you to repent of these things that grieve the Spirit
Some will be really hard to repent
Pray and seek counsel from Spiritual leader regarding these things
Holy Spirit is more than enough for whatever challenge
If you realize that John 3:18 is true, repent and turn to Lord
18 “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”
a. Believe in the name of the Son of God today, right now even, the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. We are not promised another.
c. Time to break up with old dirty sin and pursue what is worthy, the Lord Jesus Christ.
