Part 2: Sanctification - Jesus' Prayer for You.

John 17:1-26

1 Thess. 5:23a, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless…”

1.) The Lord Knew They Weren’t Sanctified.

  • John 17:6-9, “...They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.”
  • John 17:16, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it…”
  • Yet, the disciples were still: revengeful, easily offended, cowardly, position seekers, grudge-holders, sharp tongued…
  • Luke 9:51-56, “...Shall we call down fire from heaven to destroy them”

2.) The Lord Knew They Needed To Be Sanctified.

  • John F. Hay, “Christ is not so fickle that He would have prayed for something which was not needed.”
  • 1 Thess. 4:3a, “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified…”

3.) The Lord Knew the Success of the Church Depended On Their Sanctification.

  • John 17:11, 18-19 “...Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name - the name you gave me - so that they may be one as we are one.” “As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.”
  • Acts 1:4-5, 8, "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…”

4.) The Lord Prayed For Our Sanctification Too.

  • John 17:20-21a, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message…”
  • James 4:1, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?"
  • 1 Corinthians 1:10, “I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought."
  • 2 Corinthians 13:11, “Brothers... Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace…”
