Introduction
Old Testament Scripture
“And inasmuch as they gave the command to leave the stump and roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be assured to you, after you come to know that Heaven rules.
Its important for us to know that the heavens do rule, and that God is still on his throne.
The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”
It is apparent that for the Jews adhearance to the Law out-wighted a man being healed on the Sabbath day.
The Sabbath day seams to be the issue at hand, not the miraculous healing of the crippled man.
Do you risk being cured for carrying your bed on the Sabbath, a bed which had been apart of your affliction.
The Jews were blind to not only the healing work of God in their midst and in their faces.
The healed man is found in the temple
The healed man is found in the temple
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
The Jews were angry because Jesus performed a working miracle on the Sabbath
For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.
The Sabbath
The Sabbath
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
New Testament Sabbath
And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
Jesus trancends the Sabbath becaue of who is.
The Sabbath day does not hender the work of Christ because he is Lord of the Sabbath because of his being equal to God.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
John 5:17-24, Jesus explains his equality with God as his father and his relationship to God the father as his son.
The work of God
The work of God
The Old Testament is filled with the works of God on behalf of man.
God in the Old Testament was performing his works on behalf of man:
In creation:
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
All the work God did in preparation for the creation of man. God had provided all that humanity need to live on earth.
Light, food etc
Sin:
Sin:
God worked in provided covering for the nakedness of man>
Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
Something had to die for God to aquire skins for their covering.
God is a door closer:
So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in.
God works at shutting us in and shutting the danger out.
God work was outside of us and on behalf of us.
We know the details of the great Exodus from Egypt to the promis land, and the wilderness wondering and the works God performed for the children of Isreal.
Jesus works on the inside of us:
Jesus works on the inside of us:
But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
The anger of the Jews:
Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.
God started the work and Jesus is finishing the work, and the work is the work of salvation for the souls of man.
that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
Jesus then gave a clearly defined response about the relationship between the Father (God) and the Son (Himself).
First, the Son can do nothing without the Father
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
Second, the Father loves the Son and reveals everything to Him ,
For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
Third, the power to bestow life itself is shared by the Father and the Son:
For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.
Fourth, God has given all judgment over to the Son,
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
Fifth, the Father and the Son share equal honor,
that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Sixth, belief in the words of the Son result in eternal life,
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Finally, the very consummation of the age will be by and through the Son (5:25–30).
