Return to the LORD Your God
Return to the LORD Your God
Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
“Return, O Israel, to the LORD Your God”
The immediate separation between the Wicked Israel and the Righteous Israel is t’shuvah (repentance). Remember that the image that is painted with t’shuvah is that of turning from the way that you were going and go the other way. The True Way.
“…for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.”
The image of walking is reflected here with the language of use. The people “stumbled” or became “tripped up” or “fall into ruin” because of their iniquity.
“Take with you words and return to the LORD; say to Him...”
Take away all iniquity
Accept what is good
And we will pay with bulls, the vows of our lips.
Assyria shall not save us
We will not ride on horses
We will say no more, “Our God” to the work of our hands.
For in you, the orphan finds mercy.
The homeless, Fatherless, and those without residence in family
Not my people. No Mercy.
The orphan is declaring mercy
Their Help Comes from the LORD
Their Help Comes from the LORD
I will heal their apostasy
The people will not be able to heal their own unbelief and waywardness, but it will be the LORD who will heal their unbelief and guide them in righteousness, in the True Israel, the True Righteous and Covenant-Keeping Son, Jesus Christ.
I will love them freely
No longer bound by retribution but in the One to whom we are in. The True Israel.
For my anger has turned from them.
Why??
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Notice how the language here changes to “He”
From the beginning of Hosea, Israel has been identified as “she” but the True and Righteous Israel is defined in “Him” Jesus Christ
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
