What Do You Glory In?
Jeremiah 9:23–24
To glory in anything is to make it the chief delight.
I. Some Things Men Glory In.
1. Wisdom. “Let not the wise glory in their wisdom.”
Examples; Solomon-see 1 kings 11:4-6 “4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father.5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and went not fully after the Lord, as did David his father.
Ahithophel-see 2 Samuel 16:23, 17:2323 And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had enquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom. 23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.
2. Power. “Neither let the mighty glory in his might.”
Example: Samson-10 feats of Strength. see Judges 14:6 thru 16:30

B. Killing 30 Philistines Jdgs 14:19
C. Burning of the Philistines fields Jdgs 15:4-6
D. Another slaughter of the Philistines Jdgs 15:7-8
E. Killing a 1000 Philistines with a donkey’s jawbone Jdgs 15:14-17
F. Taking the Gate of Gaza after sleeping with a prostitute Jdgs 16:3
G. Escape from the bow strings Jdgs 16:9
H. Escape from new ropes Jdgs 16:12
I. Escape from the loom (A device used to hold thread securely in order to weave them) Jdgs 16:14
J. Killing of 3000 Philistines before his death Jdgs 16:28-30
3. Wealth. “Let not the rich glory in his riches.”
Example: see The rich fool-Luke 122:13-2113 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.16 And he spoke a parable to them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
1 Timothy 6:17Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
II. Things Worth Glorying In.
1. The Knowledge of God. “Let him that glorieth, glory in this, that he knoweth Me.
Example: Moses- Psalm 103:7 7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
Paul-Philippians 3:10 ” That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
2 The Character of God. “Loving, Just, Righteous.”
(Loving)-1 John 4:7-8 “7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Psalm 17:7 “Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.
(Just)-Deuteronomy 32:4 4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
(Righteous)-Psalm 111:3 “His work is honourable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
Revelations 16:5 “And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
Paul’s use of Jeremiah 9:24 in 1 Corinthians 1:31 where boasting is only in the Lord who has not called many wisemen, not many mighty not many noble, but he has chosen the foolish things, the weak things, base things, despised things and things which are not. Why? verse 29 says That no flesh should glory in his presence. Also Paul uses it in 2 Corinthians 10:17.
