Romans 14:11–12 NKJV
11 For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God.” 12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.
Title - Our Stewardship
Series - Stewardship

Background

Definition

STEWARDSHIP — the management of another person’s property, finances, or household affairs.

The careful use, control and management of the possessions of another that have been entrusted to one.

STEWARDSHIP Responsibility to manage all the resources of life for the glory of God, acknowledging God as provider.

Stewards were servants in charge of managing the household affairs and keeping order in the family. They were usually slaves (although at Crete wives managed their husbands’ homes; Clark, Emerging Elders, 93).

Keyword
“give account”
to give account means to provide a detailed report of one’s actions
to give account means to give a reason for one’s action

The Main Idea

Everyone of us will stand before God to give account of his/her own decisions and actions.
sinners on the day of judgment
Matthew 12:36 NKJV
36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
1 Peter 4:5 NKJV
5 They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
Hebrews 4:13 NKJV
13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
saints - on the judgment seat of Christ
Everyone of us today are stewards of God.
we will give account because we are not the owners
we will give account because we are responsible for ourselves

Point no. 1 - Stewardship is a big responsibility

A steward is a governor or administrator of property, household, or servants under his care.
The Heb. word SAR is translated officials, commanders, princes, steward, overseer
1 Chronicles 28:1 NKJV
1 Now David assembled at Jerusalem all the leaders of Israel: the officers of the tribes and the captains of the divisions who served the king, the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, and the stewards over all the substance and possessions of the king and of his sons, with the officials, the valiant men, and all the mighty men of valor.
1 Chronicles 28:1 NASB95
1 Now David assembled at Jerusalem all the officials of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the commanders of the divisions that served the king, and the commanders of thousands, and the commanders of hundreds, and the overseers of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, with the officials and the mighty men, even all the valiant men.
SAR implies 2 things: rulership and responsibility
the carnal sees the position; the spiritual sees the responsibility
the carnal demands entitlement; the spiritual sees the stewardship
entitlement leads to abuses and misuses; stewardship leads to proper administration and use
Biblical stewardship means we are not the owner. God owns everything.
Colossians 1:16 NKJV
16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
all things were created by Him and for Him
Exodus 19:5 NKJV
5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.
all the earth is Mine
Job 41:11 NKJV
11 Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is Mine.
everything under the heaven is Mine
Psalm 50:10–12 NKJV
10 For every beast of the forest is Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the mountains, And the wild beasts of the field are Mine. 12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you; For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.
Ezekiel 18:4 NKJV
4 “Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.
all souls are Mine
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NKJV
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
your body belongs to God

Point no. 2 - Man as God’s steward

Man is steward of his home
Genesis 1:28 NKJV
28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
to subdue - control in order to administer or manage
Genesis 2:15 NKJV
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
to tend (cultivate) and the keep (maintain) it
Man is steward of his family
Genesis 3:9 NKJV
9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
God looked for Adam, being head of the family
Genesis 4:9–10 NKJV
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
where is Abel your brother
what have you done...
Israel was steward of God’s land - Canaan
Leviticus 25:23–24 NKJV
23 ‘The land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with Me. 24 And in all the land of your possession you shall grant redemption of the land.
Israel will possess the land in behalf of God
they cannot sell the land that they do not own
redemption is good stewardship practice
These principles apply to all humans
the proper care of the earth - natural resources, etc.
Revelation 11:18 NKJV
18 The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, And the time of the dead, that they should be judged, And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, And those who fear Your name, small and great, And should destroy those who destroy the earth.”
the proper care of human life
Genesis 9:5–6 NKJV
5 Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man. 6 “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man.
the proper care of the family
Malachi 2:14–16 NKJV
14 Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because the Lord has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by covenant. 15 But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. 16 “For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the Lord of hosts. Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.”
Proverbs 22:6 NKJV
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.
Ephesians 6:4 NKJV
4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

Point no. 3 - Stewardship from Adam to Christ

Man turned out to be a poor steward of creation - because of sin
we destroy lives - directly and indirectly
we destroy our homes
we destroy our families, our children
we are destroying God’s creation
Adam’s failure has been provided for already in the mind of God
1 Corinthians 15:20–22 NKJV
20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
Ephesians 1:9–10 NKJV
9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.
Jesus Christ was appointed steward of all creation , not just the earth!
Jesus Christ was appointed to gather together everything that Adam failed in his stewardship!
God’s design was for man to govern creation, not in the condition of natural man, but in the condition of glorified beings, the new creation!
Hebrews 2:5 NKJV
5 For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels.
God has appoint the “world to come” under Christ, not under angels
Hebrews 2:6–9 NKJV
6 But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? 7 You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands. 8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
Christ Himself will give account to God
1 Corinthians 15:23–28 NKJV
23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.
Jesus exemplies good and faithful stewardship
he does not do things according to his will
he fullfilles the will of the Father
he gives account of all his actions to the Father
Jesus will give up all authority and become like us (ordinary human)
Jesus will rule all creation in the eternal age as God’s steward

Conclusion

We have become poor stewards through Adam the fallen man.
Let us learn to become good stewards through Jesus Christ.
