Do You See What I See?

Zechariah 3:1 – 6:15

FPBC December 18, 2005 [PM]

What is the least amount of sleep you’ve gotten in one night?  Zechariah probably didn’t get much sleep the night he had 8 visions!

Joshua’s Clothing                                                   3:1 – 10

Vision

·        Joshua (high priest) stands before Angel of the Lord

·        Satan accuses Joshua

·        Satan rebuked by Angel of the Lord

·        Joshua’s filthy garments traded for clean robes

Interpretation

·        Joshua is standing before God as the representative of the people – not as an individual

·        Filthy garments represent self-righteousness of Israel

·        God makes us acceptable through His work

·        Joshua given two commands

o       Walk in God’s way

o       Keep God’s commands

·        Three results of obedience

o       Govern God’s house – would continue to serve

o       Keep God’s courts pure from idolatry

o       Access to God’s presence

·        Joshua and priests were picture prophecies of Messiah

o       The BRANCH

o       The stone with infinite insight and wisdom

Candlestick & Two Olive Trees                            4:1 – 14

Vision

·        Sees a solid gold lampstand with a bowl on top to hold oil coming from two trees

Question & Answers

·        Zechariah’s question:  What are these?

·        Angel’s question:  You don’t know?

o       Surprised that Z could not interpret on his own.

Interpretation

·        Two trees represent ministry of Zerubbabel and Joshua

o       Zerubbabel had started building temple – and he would finish it.

o       Obstacles would be removed by God’s power

o       Those who doubted would see God’s ability given to Zerubbabel

·        An all-knowing, all-seeing God would ensure this occurred.

Flying Scroll                                                                5:1 – 4

Vision

·        Unfolded scroll (30’x15’ – size of tabernacle) flying through the air with writing on both sides.

·        Writing foretold expulsion of every thief; every perjurer cut off and expelled

·        Scroll passes through land and destroys houses of the wicked

Interpretation

·        Picture of the coming Millennial kingdom

o       Rule with a rod of iron

o       Sinner judged rapidly, severely, completely

Basket (Ephah) & Woman                                     5:5 – 11

Ephah (basket)

·        A measuring container

o       Like a bushel basket

o       Covered with a lead lid

Woman

·        Wickedness personified

o       Lead lid used to absolutely contain woman

Removal to Babylon

·        Basket taken to Shinar (Babylon)

o       Would be placed in a house (temple?)

o       Eventually rebel against God             Rev. 17:3 – 5

·        Basket’s removal prepares Israel for blessing!

Four Chariots                                                             6:1 – 8

Vision

·        Chariots coming from between 2 brass mountains

o       Red horses

o       Black horses

o       White horses

o       Dappled horses

Interpretation

·        God’s judgment on Gentile nations

·        Two mountains:  Mt. Zion & Mt. Olivet

·        Chariots take judgment to nations

o       Black and white to north (Babylon)

o       Dappled to south (Egypt)

o       Go throughout earth to bring rest from nations

Crowning of the High Priest                                  6:9 – 15

Command

·        Make a crown of silver and gold for Joshua’s head

·        Use the silver and gold from the captive’s gifts.

Interpretation

·        Joshua pictures the coming “BRANCH” (Messiah)

o       BRANCH will lead worship in the Millennial temple

o       BRANCH will be heavenly king and high priest

o       BRANCH will reign over Israel

·        God is not finished with Israel!
