Philippians1:12-30    “Real Living”                  AFC Papua                  July/04

Introduction:

  • How joyful are you right now?  Joy – what is it, where does it come from, what is it like, how can we have it?
  • God leading to use Philippians
  • My personal journey re joy

·        – desire to have it (KB field – in Serimbu and summer workers (Sylvia – so good to hear you laugh again!), RBMU prayer mtg (I’d like to experience more of the Joy of the Lord being my strength, …

·        Some sage “Every man dies, but not every man lives”

·        …now relation to burnout…

Philippians – a major theme is JOY – the NT book on that focuses on Joy

occurances of joy - different Gk words

. Paul emphasized the need for believers to rejoice in Christ. “Joy” (chara) is used four times (Phil. 1:4, 25; 2:2; 4:1); “rejoice” (chairō) occurs eight times (1:18 [twice]; 2:17-18; 3:1, 4:4 [twice], 10); and “glad” occurs thrice (2:17-18, 28). (In 1:26 the word “joy” is a different Gr. word; there it is the word “glad,” “boast,” or “glory,” [kauchēma], which also occurs in 2:16 and 3:3.) Paul wrote frequently in this epistle about the mind of a child of God. One’s manner of life is truly a reflection of what occupies his mind.

Referring to Wiesbe’s Commentary – various times, he labels this section Chapter 1 – The Single Mind (I’d say the single everything – singleness of heart maybe)

    1. The fellowship of the Gospel 1-11
    2. The furtherance of the   “  12-26
    3. The faith of the Gospel  27-30
  • Interesting – again he starts with the gospel, mentioned 9xs, 6xs in Ch 1.

“For to me to live is Christ”

  1. For to me ….his personal testimony – not theory, but reality , not aspiration, but a fact
  2. ..to live … - reason for existence, source of energy, inspiration for hope and meaning,  what did it mean for Paul to live,?
  3. …is Christ –

not a body of knowledge

not a formula

not a code of ethics

not a philosophy (Taoism – Dave’s friend)

not a worldview

not my work, ministry, translation, it’s not primarily the grand mission that inspired Paul, not a captivating passion of global implications

(communism provided that, the environment provides that, social justice…. Al Kehler guests in his home – president of Columbia Univ-New York, writer for , chief executive officer of Time-Warner, )

His LIFE was A PERSON,  THE Person of Jesus Christ

Live…because of Christ physically – Jesus the Creator

Live…spiritually.. because of Christ – death and resurrection, the life of Christ in Him

Live…emotionally – rejoicing in Jesus, who Jesus was, of what Jesus was doing,

This was the secret to Paul’s JOY, his life was Jesus…and what was Jesus like…WHAT IS HE LIKE - he IS a joyful Person.  (Ch 2:1-11, Dave will be giving us another look at who this Jesus was, what He was like)  When look at his life, he loved to talk about joy, and giving his joy to his disciples,

·        Bruce Marchiano – In the Footsteps of Jesus – impact on ppl

Take Christ out of Paul’s life, and your left with nothing.  Jesus IS Pauls’ life.  I long for my life to reflect more of the joyfulness of Jesus, and to in such ato live more in the joy

·

Application:

What are you living for?  _ans________

For other people’s approval (colleagues, leaders, nationals, wife’s, family, who?)

For  adventure?

For recognition as being a productive missionary – for your work?

What turns your crank, fills you mind in empty moments, inspires you, brings you joy, fulfillment, a sense of contentment?

For ….

What god are you serving?   It is revealed when it lets you down

--------Phi 1:21 -

For to me (emoi gar). Fine example of the ethical dative. Paul gives his own view of living.

To live is Christ (to zēin Christos). No copula (estin), but to zēin (the act of living present active infinitive) is the subject as is shown by the article to. Living is coextensive with Christ.    -----(Vincent’s Word Studies - To live is Christ (τὸ ζῆν ΧριστὸςLit, the living is Christ. Compare Gal_2:20. He has no thought of life apart from Christ.)------

Gain (kerdos). Old word for any gain or profit, interest on money (so in papyri). In N.T. only here, Phi_3:7; Tit_1:11.

To die (to apothanein, second aorist active infinitive, single act) is to cash in both principal and interest and so to have more of Christ than when living. So Paul faces death with independence and calm courage. (Robertson Word Pictures - SWORD)
