Psalm 46: 2-3
We Will Not fear
In these next two verses of the Psalm, David puts forth some potentially terrible events that could take place: ____________! Why was David writing about a potential earthquake? Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he wrote of earthquakes for a good reason: he was living on top of a ________ seismic fault line.
It is almost impossible to prepare for an earthquake: you never know when one will occur. Or where. Or how strong it will be.
David understood the potential for major destruction when one occurs. But he also understood that he, and we, should not ______ because of them. That's the thrust of verse two: Therefore, we will not fear. If we believe the truth in verse 1, then we can say with David that we need not fear. Fear is overcome by ________ in God.
David was writing about earthquakes. Real ones. I think we can extend his concerns about any ____________ tragedy. And I would even go so far as to say that it includes _________ in our lives that we consider earthquakes: loss of a job, loss of a spouse, child or parent; divorce; health challenges; and more. In all of those, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble. Therefore, we will not _________.
David then ends this part of his song with the word Selah. It means: "Stop and think about it". For a musician, it would be a full rest, a measure long. For us, it means to take a few minutes, or longer, to really _______ about the wonderful promise there is here, so that we need not fear.
