A TOUCH OF TRUST
Mark 5:21-36
Ailing Woman Touches Jesus
SUMMARY OF WHERE WE HAVE GONE SO FAR IN MARK’S GOSPEL...
NEED TO STRESS THAT JESUS PERFORMED THESE MIRACLES TO AUTHENTICATE WHO HE WAS.
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
It is also unlikely that magic or psychosomatic suggestion is an adequate explanation for Jesus’ healings. Jesus does not use any aids, incantations, or tricks to heal. His healings are simple and straightforward, and performed through word and touch. Howard C. Kee has helpfully delineated the differences in ancient thought concerning medicine (building on the foundation of the natural order), miracle (based on belief in divine intervention), and magic (manipulating mysterious forces for personal benefit). Kee demonstrates that Jesus’ healings normally belong to the second of these three categories: miracle. The only times Jesus uses anything other than word or touch are when the bleeding woman touches the hem of his robe and power flows from him spontaneously, or when he uses saliva (on one occasion mixed with mud). The hem of his robe is not magic as if the healing is active, nor did Jesus “use” his robe in any way; rather, the healing is passive, indicating that healing power radiates from Jesus’ presence, even through his clothing. This is an extension of touch. Similarly, the use of saliva is an extension of touch. Jesus’ body is infused with God’s power by the Holy Spirit.
