INTRO:
The Need:
You have a problem - sin (delighted rebellion to God)
Holy God demands justice for that rebellion
What is that justice? = death // spiritually and physically
God gives the law for righteousness and revealing of our inability to fulfill it on our own
Christ fulfills requirements of the law and pays the penalty for you and me
Gives us new life
Galatians 2:19–21 ESV
19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

A Believer is Crucified with Christ

Galatians 2:20 ESV
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
What does Paul mean he was crucified with Christ?
in order to answer we must answer
Why was Christ crucified?
You had no ability to have right standing before God on your own merit
We were given the law:
Reveals God’s holiness (Leviticus)
Reveals our brokenness (Romans 7:7-13)
Parable of the rich young ruler - thinking he has kept the law
Romans 8:3 ESV
3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
Isaiah 53:5 ESV
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
THE GOSPEL: Christ was crucified to pay our price, fulfills the requirement of the law, and gives us the reward for what He did
ILLUS: 1,000 Question Test
You could not pass the test
No matter how hard you try
No matter how much you studied and prepared - a hopeless situation
The author of the test came in took it for you and gave you the grade he earned
To be crucified with Christ = no longer under the righteous requirement of the law
Romans 7:4 ESV
4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.

A Believer’s Life is No Longer Their Own

Galatians 2:20 ESV
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
We are dead to the law
Given new life in Christ that we may be righteous before God
Ezekiel 36:26–27 ESV
26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
Fulfilled in the work of Christ
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Saul to Paul conversion
No longer trying to earn right standing before God, fulfilled in Christ and now able to live how God has called us to
ILLUS: Oliver and Company
Baptism represents
This is why Paul said:
Philippians 3:7–9 ESV
7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—
nothing of his former life compared to Christ
He was changed by the Gospel
He had hope
APP:
That hope is offered to you tonight
trust in Christ
put to death the old life
take the gift of the Gospel
